Huckleberry Seed ended Vanessa Rousso’s incredible run in this Championship to finally, after compiling the best recording in NBC Heads-Up history, win his first Championship. It ended right after they started the 15k-30k level in the second match, after Seed won the first. On a board of 8-3-K [2 hearts] and a ten on the turn, Vanessa bet 30k. Seed raised, making it a hundred more. Rousso thought for a half a minute and quietly said, “I’m all in.” Seed quickly called.

Huck had K-7 for top pair, and Vanessa had J-T for second pair. Huck slowplayed the top pair on the flop waited for Vanessa to get close enough to get stuck. After a harmless five of clubs on the river, Huckleberry Seed became the fifth NBC Heads-Up Champion.

After 55 minutes of play, with blinds at 15k-30k, Vanessa Rousso moved all-in before the flop for 280k. (They started play with 640k chips apiece.) Seed thought it over for about half a minute – maybe less, I wasn’t timing – and called. Vanessa showed Q-Jo. Huck had Kd-Jd. His king-high held up and he takes the first match of the best of three.

Update: It’s 7:55 PM, and the third level of play just began in the first match in the best-of-three. Vanessa Rousso has a small lead over Huckleberry Seed.

In a world where genetic engineering was much more advanced, Huck Seed and Vanessa Rousso would be wasting their time playing poker. Seed, 6’7″ has beaten an NBA player one-on-one, run a marathon on the 4th of July, played five rounds of competitive golf in one day, and is currently on permanent leave from CalTech. Vanessa Rousso graduated at the top of her high school class, graduated from Duke in 2 1/2 years, and is pretty enough to use her looks in modeling or acting. The $500,000 first prize is sitting in front of the table but it’s peanuts compared to what their offspring would fetch on an efficient market.

So I stand by that title. It’s not hyperbole.

With the early matches today going so quickly, and the fat part of the Sunday schedule on Full Tilt looking, it was increasingly bothering me that I wasn’t playing online today. So at 1:22, I gave up the ghost and signed up for the $200,000 Double-Deuce.

Sam Farha versus Huckleberry Seed? Maybe when Sam was matched up with David Williams there was more sartorial style, but are there two more cool, more unflappable ice men than Huck Seed and Sam Farha?

Coolest man makes the finals.

Vanessa Rousso and Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier were both expected to be out by now. But no one would deny that both deserve to be here. Elky is on one of poker’s all-time great heaters and is slippery as an eel at the table. What Elky’s done in the last year, Vanessa’s done in the last week – or all her life. And she played brilliant against Daniel Negreanu in the quarters, fast-playing a pair of full houses (yeah, it gotta get lucky to make two full houses) and getting Daniel to make “hero calls” with marginal hands.

IT’S VANESSA ROUSSO’S WORLD AND WE’RE ALL JUST RENTING SPACE

Three lightning fast rounds left the stage in the quarterfinals to Daniel Negreanu v. Vanessa Rousso. Each started with 160,000 in chips and blinds of 1,000-2,000. In none of the first three matches did the matches go longer than the fifteen-minute first round.

The first quarterfinal matches were like Dempsey-Willard or Hagler-Hearns: thrilling flurries of action, but over way too fast. And damned if Hellmuth and Grospellier didn’t do the same thing.

I’m still in a different time zone than everyone else. Even though I changed the time on my watch and it says 12:15, it still seems too early to be drinking beer. And it definitely seems to early to HAVE been drinking beer.

I come from Arizona, a state that does not observe Daylight Savings Time. When the matches finished last night, I had a quick dinner, and went up to my room. They were supposed to open the tournament room at 10:15 AM, so I set the alarm on my iPod for 9 AM, and went to sleep.
