There are some awesome matches coming up. Gus Hansen v. Huck Seed? Eli Elezra v. Erick Lindgren? Tom Dwan v. Barry Greenstein? Scotty Nguyen v. Ted Forrest?
Who’d want to put their neck on the line and predict winners for these and the other twelve second-round match ups? Me.
The red brackets (hearts and diamonds) go first, starting at 1:30 (about 30 minutes from now) followed by the black brackets (clubs and spades) at about 4 PM.

Bertrand Grospellier over Fred Collins – Collins, a Pokerstars online qualifier, just wouldn’t let go of Elky, surviving all-in after all-in on his short stack. Finally, Grospellier finished him off in the longest match of the night.

Paul Wasicka over Nicholas Joy – Joy, a Full Tilt online qualifier came achingly close to finishing off the 2007 champion.
Don Cheadle over David Pham – Cheadle is an excellent player, very serious, and a dragon slayer.
Phil Ivey over Jennifer Tilly – When I saw Phil, I said, ‘Geez Phil, you look terrific. You lose a bunch of weight?” He shrugged, “A little.” The guy doesn’t give anything away. I’ll have to tell Ted Forrest my undercover information-gathering mission ended in failure.

Apologies for not filing the results of the Clubs & Spades brackets immediately after their completion. It was a very long day, with the Spades immediately following the Clubs. Then, as should be obvious from the beginning of this account, I was too debilitated to post anything late Friday night. I shall do my best – it’s now 10:45 AM Saturday – to post these results and observations along with a preview of the upcoming Round 2 matches before they start at 1:30 PM today.

So this is the conversation I overheard between Ted Forrest and Greg Raymer, before butting in.
Ted: Who do you play in the first round?
Greg: Jennifer Harman.
Ted: I think you can take her pretty easily.
Greg: I think I can beat her.
Ted: At wrestling.

It was so cold outside, even with the occasional heat lamps, that I decided for strategic reasons to spend as much time as I could huddled with attractive women. So I had lengthy conversations with Annie Duke (about Celebrity Apprentice and Darfur), Michelle Lau (about Federational Internationale de Poker Association, which is trying to encourage uniform worldwide poker rules), Katie L (about how she was going to skin me alive and crawl in my carcass for warmth – well, actually, she said she wanted to bet me on the outcome of the Championship which, based on past performance, is about the same thing), Heather B, and Mike Matusow’s girlfriend Jessica.

The second bracket, Diamonds, began right on time at 4 PM. This despite the fact that there was a last-minute substitution. No, dear reading, I was not pressed into service, despite by record-setting comeback in the recent Midnight Madness. David Oppenheim was a late addition, and he made the most of the opportunity.

The first bracket completed play a little after 3 PM. (They started at 1:30 PM, right on time, and Leeann Tweeden got the intros perfectly in one take.) It was as strange a first round as I’ve seen in five years, and not very good if you’re a Full Tilt fan.

Finally, they opened the doors to PURE and let us in. First, I had my hand stamped. Then, as an added security procedure, a pink bracelet was attached to my wrist. Why? I soon found out.

The Pairings Party was to be held at PURE, the mega-hot nightclub at Caesars Palace. According to the schedule, I could pick up my media credentials at 8:30, the red carpet started at 9, and the drawing of the pairings would start at 10 PM.
