My day started in Scottsdale, Arizona in a sixth-grade science class. It ended with my standing on the roof of a nightclub at Caesars Palace, talking with Ted Forrest about how much Phil Ivey weighed. I learned some unlikely things in unlikely places. Oh, and I attended the pairings party for NBC’s Fifth Heads-Up Championship.
It was an eventful day.

I’ve been at the NBC HUC all five years they’ve run it. In the first year, I was distributing advance copies of SUICIDE KING. In the second year, I was distributing advance copies of the giant magazine article I wrote about the 2006 Andy Beal games. For the third and fourth years, I’ve written about the Championship in this blog.
I think it’s led to some of my best writing. While sitting in the tournament room waiting for the matches to start (and as I compose what I think will be an interesting account of last night’s pairings party and other adventures), let me share links to some of my favorite posts.

After over a year of preparation, the Full Tilt Poker Academy is open. This is Full Tilt’s multi-media educational product. (I submitted a proposal to operate the Academy, but they went with Jay Greenspan, who has worked his ass off.)
PLEASE, if you have any interest in developing as a player, take the time and effort to learn how the Academy works and absorb its lessons. This incredible tool is almost unprecedented.

I am in the familiar position of being way behind on my writing obligations. I have plenty that I want to share with you in advance of the Heads-Up Championship as well as several Full Tilt news items to share but instead, I am compelled to write about shoes.

My friend Annie Duke is one of the 16 celebrities appearing on this season’s edition of NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice. NBC and Donald Trump made the smart move last year of extending the franchise by having celebrities play out the game based on how much money they raise for charity. Because hot, current, A-list celebrities won’t do reality TV, you get people like Scott Hamilton, Dennis Rodman, Joan Rivers … and Annie Duke. The first episode, which ran on Sunday night and is streaming on NBC.com, was fascinating.

Last week, a guest blogger for Full Tilt’s Poker on the Rail named Julius Goat commemorated Full Tilt’s introduction of micro-stakes tables by challenging Michael Craig to a match along the lines of Tom Dwan’s challenge.

If this is March, it must be time for the Fifth NBC Heads-Up Championship (“NBC HUC”). It’s 80 degrees F outside my office in Scottsdale, Arizona – that’s 25 degrees C for those of you in the rest of the world – so I can’t be sure of the season. But the NBC Press Release showed up in my e-mail last week so the HUC is indeed coming to Caesars Palace March 6-8 and to NBC (for six consecutive SUndays in April and May) and to CNBC (whenever the financial news is too bleak to report) and Universal HD (which doesn’t broadcast according to any schedule I understand).
