#760 – 2009 WSOP #18 – Daily Tilt #8 – Friday, June 5, AM Edition
Two events finished on Thursday night. Travis Johnson, who arrived in Vegas with $3,500, won the $1,500 NLHE and takes home over $666,000. Phil Ivey, who had $6-$10 million in prop bets riding on the outcome, won his sixth bracelet in No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven and, instead of giving interviews, headed to the Brasilia Room to play the $10,000 Mixed Event Championship, where he was getting anted off. (He didn’t make it to Day 2 but maybe we can all use a little rest, huh?)

Notes: I will be writing about Phil Ivey and the historical perspective of his sixth bracelet over the next several days … At first, I didn’t recognize the name “John Monnette,” but then I saw his picture and said, “No, not him. Anyone but him!” I played against Monnette in a couple tournaments in 2007 and, while I recognized that he was a skilled player, I can only hope he stopped being so whiny and miserable. I wrote about him in this Blog, back in post #195, nicknaming him “Pouty McWhiskers.” Here is what I said: “He can’t lose a pot without muttering something nasty about the other player. ‘Moron,’ ‘idiot,’ and ‘unbelievable’ were his favorites …. I didn’t even like the way this guy LOOKED and I could care less what people look like at the poker table. But he had this expression that I think he considered a Poker Scowl but it looked more like a pout. And he didn’t have enough facial hair for a mustache but kept it anyway, along with some I’m-deep-in-the-World-Series stubble. He wore earphones, which he frequently put in his mouth. The worst thing about Pouty was his treatment of the dealers. He … had to start in with every dealer, usually claiming the dealer was wasting his time, but making sure to spend enough time on the argument, even after the substance of the disagreement was over, to take a bunch more time. Then he would blame the dealer for THAT. Finally, he said, in as angry a little voice as he could muster, ‘I’m trying to do my job and I can’t because you’re wasting my time!’ It would be great to hear that he’s cleaned up his act. Or at least that someone gave him a richly-deserved wedgie. I really think the skilled players should have a duty to behave and set a standard for newer and less skilled players. I’d appreciate hearing that Mr. Monnette got with the program.

Notes: One of the good things about the new chip stacks (3x the buy-in in nominal “dollar value” of chips) and starting levels (four levels before 100-200/25 ante) is more play during the first few levels. One of the bad things is that we’re discovering it’s very difficult to get to the money by the end of Day 1 … Perry Friedman, without his hair dyed some Rodman-style color and without a Full Tilt logo shaved/dyed into his hair, is almost unrecognizable. Chris Ferguson, by the way, announced that he would shave his beard if Perry won the Main Event. “In fact, I’ll shave my head.” Several other pros he was with agreed they too would shave their heads if Perry Friedman ever won the Main Event.

Notes: Andy Black has shaved his long beard. He looks so different – especially because we’re so used to seeing him at least with a goatee – that he should have save the razor for some event in which he busted in the first two levels. That way, he could have bought in a second time and probably fooled everybody. On the other hand, he doesn’t bust out early very much … This is the first event of the 2009 Series for Richard “Quiet Lion” Brodie.
