Nick Schulman won his first gold bracelet last night, taking down the ultra-difficult No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven World Championship. Although this form of poker has apparently discovered a rebirth, its long-time presence at the World Series of Poker has generally been testament to its recognition of “old school” skills. With no exposed cards, no community cards, and just two betting rounds, it is considered a tremendous test of the skills Moss, Brunson, Straus, Pearson, Baldwin, Reese, et al. brought to this game forty years ago: psychology, reading opponents, bluffing, guts, heart, fire in belly, fists of stone, broad shoulders, ice-water in the veins, steady hands, and fortitude in every other imaginable body part.
Though just twenty-four, Schulman’s success comes as no surprise to several experienced pros I spoke with, including a few whose names are on the roster of winners of this event. Congratulations on Nick on a hard-fought and well-deserved win.
