#800 – 2009 WSOP #58 – Vegas on $2,000 a Day #10 – It Was a VERY Brief Delay

POCKET KINGS, OR $300 A MINUTE

I busted out of the $1,500 NLHE event in just five minutes. On my third hand, I was dealt pocket kings. I called a raise, but after the big blind reraised, the original raiser moved all-in. I knew there was a chance he had aces but I was willing to take the risk.

Yep, pocket aces, and I was out fast, my earliest exit from a World Series event this year or any other.

I can tell you several things from this experience, brief though it was:

1. “Playing your rush” can be expensive. I’ve now spent $3,000 on a pair of early exits out of my Razz money.

2. Your assessment of yourself as a poker player shouldn’t be too results oriented. It’s about how you play, not about how the cards fall or short-term results. But it feels a lot better busting out in three hands when you just took second in a $2,500 buy-in tournament.

3. There is a lot of debate going on right now about events selling out, seating alternates, and late registrations. I’m sure the latest round in the argument is from the players who tried to get into this event (which sold out) and couldn’t. Save your anger, gang. I played the event and I WISH it had sold out before I bought in.

4. There is a silver lining. I’m already playing on Full Tilt from the Undisclosed Location. (In fact, I’m playing the MSOP equivalent of the WSOP eventĀ from which I just busted.) And I’ll get a chance to catch you up on all the WSOP action which, after all, is my day job.
