There was once a time when the name “Joan Rivers” elicited non-ironic laughter. She was considered a possible successor to Johnny Carson for the Tonight Show and headlined in the big rooms in Vegas. Consequently, Joan Rivers impersonators roamed the Strip like mastodons, woolly mammoths, or that most terrifying of all prehistoric beasts, the mighty Thunder Lizard. In short, there was an excess of demand for Joan Rivers, and men who dress up like women jumped into the vacuum.

When I returned from Scottsdale, I heard that Marco Traniello had a story to share for the Blog about a wedding he attended last weekend. It’s a cool story but I have to warn you that it enforces two Italian stereotypes. They are positive stereotypes, but stereotypes just the same: (1) Italians are a close-knit people; and (2) Italian men are way ahead of us Americanos in charm and passion. I’m not trying to advance those stereotypes; I’m just telling you what I heard.

Good news, everybody! Because I fruitlessly chased a low draw in Stud Eight-or-Better in yesterday’s HORSE, I won’t be urinating in the gas tank of Uncle Tilty’s Bentley and shaking my naked rear end at his dog-walker. So it’s back to covering WSOP action (though I may make a sidetrip to tonight’s OEOB/SEOB, just to keep Uncle Tilty guessing).
In other news, Erik Seidel is going for his ninth bracelet at the final table in PLHE, and Full Tilt has a lot of players in the hunt, led by Roland de Wolfe, on Day 2 of the $10k Deuce-to-Seven World Championship.

Michael Craig alert: I made it to Day 2 of the $3,000 HORSE yesterday, so that may cause a slight change in coverage – like if I win the bracelet and $300k I’ll get drunk, throw up on Uncle Tilty, reveal the Undisclosed Location, and wake-up to find I got a Paradise Poker tattoo on my forehead and the password on my blogging program has somehow changed. But I’m kidding. Success won’t change me – lord knows failure hasn’t.

I got too busy on other Series matters to finish my anecdotes about the champions of the previous 39 Main Events. In Part II, I had managed to make it through 1990, Mansour Matloubi. If you recall, I said all I could remember about his final table was about how pissed off Hans “Tuna” Lund was about finishing second, getting in his chips good twice for the championship, only to get outdrawn twice.

John Juanda and David Pham both fell short in their efforts to win bracelet no. 5 on Monday. A number of Full Tilt’s pros have chips in the Omaha-Eight-or-Better Championship and the $2,500 NLHE 6-handed. Today marks the start of the $1,500 PLHE and the $3,000 HORSE (in which I’ll be making my fourth attempt this year to snag bracelet number … one).

In 2008, I showed up at the Series with a lot of success from 2007 and a lot of money, from my ’07 final tables and from some big tournament successes on Full Tilt in early 2008. When I cashed in my second event, the ultra-difficult $5,000 Mixed Hold ‘Em, I signed up for more events (and more expensive events) than I previously planned. After about ten consecutive DNCs (i.e. Did Not Cash) in a row, I shuffled to the single-table satellite room, tail between my legs.

Howard and Susie Lederer were having that discussion that all married couples have about The Celebrity Exception. You know, the single person each spouse can exempt from their vows of marital fidelity. In this particular discussion, I never found out who Howard’s celebrity exception is, and maybe Susie didn’t even find out.
Because Susie dropped a bombshell with her celebrity exception.

There is just one new event today, $2,500 NLHE 6-handed, but a lot of action worth watching in the ongoing events. Svetlana Gromenkova, last year’s Ladies Champion, is second in chips entering Day 2 of that event, and John Juanda is 3rd in chips at the final table of the $1,500 Stud. David Pham, like Juanda, is stalking his fifth bracelet, and he has a lot of chips in the $5,000 NLHE. But he’s also got to contend with a pair of Full Tilt’s CardRunner.com pros, chip leader Isaac Baron and short-stack David Benefield.
I’ve calculated upon my return to Las Vegas that I’m 14 blogs behind so rather than follow the action, I’ll be spending most of my day trying to catch up. (OK, curiousity will probably get me to the Amazon Room at some point ….)

David Chiu came close to winning his fifth bracelet yesterday, finishing runner-up in the $10,000 Mixed Event. We’ve got a big day ahead on Sunday, with a pair of World Championships kicking off, the Ladies at noon and the Omaha-Eight-or-Better at 5 PM. It’s also my daughter Valerie’s dance recital and my return to Vegas (after the recital).
