IveySerious22 #883 – Looking For Ivey, Part I B – At Play in the Fields of IveyPhil Ivey is an intimidating presence at the poker table. When you see that stare, it is not an illusion or an exaggeration. When I watched Phil heads-up against Andy Beal for three days in February 2006, I felt intimidated by it – and I was just watching.

Two years ago, at the Million Dollar Cash Game in London Phil was fighting a cold. After the Game, he and several other of Full Tilt’s top pros were supposed travel through Germany for a series of tournaments and appearances. Uncle Tilty was watching the Game just off-camera and, between hands, Phil made it clear that he was not looking forward to going to Germany.

After he asked for some tissues and blew his nose, Uncle Tilty asked, “You’re not getting sick on me, are you Phil?”

Phil paused to think about the implications of this, then said, “Yeah, I am feeling kind of sick. I don’t know if I can make Germany.”

Seeing Uncle Tilty squirm seemed to make Phil feel better. A grin started spreading across his face, and he couldn’t stop it until he looked like the Cheshire Cat. Finally, Ivey assured Uncle Tilty, “Don’t worry. I’ve always wanted to go to Germany.”
