suicidewatchpic #929 The Suicide King Gets the Last Laugh

Undoubtedly, Joe Cada is having a nice holiday season; he’s probably the happiest guy in the entire state of Michigan. (Geez, who would even be Number Two?) Another fellow who should be very pleased with how the Final Table turned out is Steve Soffa.

Soffa is an artist who designs watches and has a small store called HCW (“Hard Core Watches”) near to the Seafood Buffet at the Rio. Joe Cada was wearing HCW’s Suicide King Watch at the final table and his wrist attracted enough attention that I asked Shauna to find out the story about the watch.

Shauna found out from one of Joe’s friends that he usually wears a Rolex but his sponsor got him hooked up with HCW and they gave him that watch. It’s the kind of watch that is appropriate for poker and no place else. It’s huge and gaudy, like the Pamela Anderson of watches. It was perfect for a 21-year-old kid on top of the world.

The watch additionally attracted my interest because of my literary connection with the suicide king. (The king of hearts has been nicknamed “the suicide king” because he holds a broadsword in his left hand behind/at/through his head.)

Watching on the giant video monitors, I noticed Cada was wearing a giant watch with what looked like a playing card on its face. The only picture card I could imagine on a watch face was the suicide king and that, in fact, is what it was and what it was named.

I saw HCW’s products at Pokerpalooza during the first day of the Main Event. I have to admit, I was more impressed with how Joe showed off the product than by anything I saw at Pokerpalooza. At the time, the watch face looked to me like the buckle of a wrestling championship belt, or maybe like a license plate.

I probably took too much of Shauna’s time on Monday night during the heads-up match with Darvin Moon checking this out. She had to question his friends, then his agent Dan Frank from Top Set, and then talk with someone at ESPN who then checked with the camera guys to get “confirmation” on the watch. I wasn’t sure what to do with this information until Shauna reminded me of Joe Cada’s final hand. It was 9c-9d-7s-7c . . . and the king of hearts. The Suicide King.

    Very interesting!

And excellent observation! I had noticed the sword\dagger through his head, but I had no idea it was named the “Suicide King”. I have watched the movie “Suicide Kinds” though with Christopher Walken.

Again, excellent observation! I watched every episode multiple
times as well, I guess I couldn’t ask the camera guy though! ;)
