You can call Full Tilt “buttah” – because it’s on a roll. In back-to-back weeks, Full Tilt has rolled out a pair of monster promotions. Last week, it was Rush Poker, which I’m finding addicting despite having no prior interest in online cash games. This week, it’s Double Guarantees, which seems less than revolutionary but is having a gigantic impact.

Because of Andy Bloch’s offer last October, I found myself in the worst position a fat gambler could imagine: losing weight but NOT having a weight-loss bet. After posting Part II of this blog, I sent Andy Bloch a consolation note. I wanted to thank him for getting me motivated to lose weight and let him know I was on a path to doing so even though he hadn’t proposed an actual weight-loss bet.

Last Thursday, Shauna and I drove from Scottsdale to Tucson to have lunch with Roland de Wolfe. Roland was staying at the Canyon Ranch health spa with his friend Bryan. Homer Simpson, informed that his meatloaf will be ready in eight seconds, asks (I’m not sure WHO – the world? God? Science? Marge?) a famous question: “Isn’t there anything faster than a microwave?” On Monday, January 18, Full Tilt Poker did Homer Simpson proud. It introduced a new cash game called “Rush Poker.” Because Full Tilt gave me no advance notice of the product, I was left to fend for myself in evaluating it. And, emblematic of the product, I had to do it FAST.

During the last ten days of December, even though I didn’t have a bet in place, I started dieting. To get some expert advice on weight, weight loss, and weight-loss bets, I contacted the leading expert, William E. Forrest. (a/k/a Ted, a/k/a Professor Backward)

Paul McGuire has acquired the most precious commodity available to celebrities: universal recognition by a single name. Even though Pauly is known “only” in poker, where Bono, Beyonce, Price, and Madonna are entertainers and Fidel was a world leader, the achievement is still remarkable. Pauly, like me, is a mere journalist, and the people who report on what other people do are rarely remembered at all, much less than by One Name.
