Andy Beal watch #943 The Andy Beal Watch

Here’s what I found out in the last few hours: being smart and responsible and thorough usually gets you what you want in your professional life. But only usually. Sometimes you have to be a whiny little bitch to accomplish anything. After a few hours of behaving like the world owed me an explanation for why Andy Beal touched a deck of cards and I didn’t know about it, I got one.

Andy Beal was in Las Vegas for some meetings and “couldn’t resist a little poker”. (I suggested that, if he had played despite all my indications to the contrary, it was likely under these circumstances. But then again, I’ve suggested a lot of things over the last couple of posts, if for no other reason than to keep my bases covered.) He and a friend played $1,000-$2,000 and $2,000-$4,000 limit hold ‘em at the Bellagio. I’ve pieced together that it was a ring game and at least a few players who have played him or been part of the group in the past were in the game. I’m not sure if they had the players for a full table. Andy lost, but for him these are small stakes. More important to him, he had fun.

Thanks to my friends and sources – I hope in this case they overlap 100% – for indulging me.

Beal hasn’t asked me yet to return his pocket watch – the one from which he had the minute and hour hands removed so he could use the seconds-hand as a random number generator – so I don’t think he’s testing the waters for any $50,000-$100,000 heads-up action. But if the events of the last nine years prove anything, it’s that you can never say “never” where poker is concerned.

And if the events of the last two days prove anything, it’s that things happen in poker without me knowing them, even things involving Andy Beal and the pros. I’m just going to have to learn to live with that the best I can.

Not a shocker that this happened without you knowing.
