Paul McGuire has acquired the most precious commodity available to celebrities: universal recognition by a single name. Even though Pauly is known “only” in poker, where Bono, Beyonce, Price, and Madonna are entertainers and Fidel was a world leader, the achievement is still remarkable. Pauly, like me, is a mere journalist, and the people who report on what other people do are rarely remembered at all, much less than by One Name.
I’m yanking Pauly’s chain here, but only a little bit. He truly is famous in poker, and deservedly so. His Tao of Poker is an incredible mix of humor, information, history, news, updates, interviews, profiles, and opinions, presented with more style than his frenetic output suggests is possible. He is also a nice guy, a generous colleague, and a good friend.
For all those reasons, I was pleased when he asked me to be a subject for this “Tao of Five” feature, in which he profiles people by asking them five questions. As you would expect of Pauly, his questions are wide-ranging and eclectic.
He posted our interview on January 6. Pauly posts so often and so much that it has already passed into the “archive”, as the “current posts” page has room for only a week or so of his reporting. (Even in the January 2010 archive, you need to scroll down to January 6, though I strongly recommend you later – after reading the interview – scroll back up and read his blog.) In five questions, Pauly managed to get me to spill on Ted Forrest, Phil Ivey, Jeff Lisandro, SUICIDE KING, and Andy Beal.
It was a lot of fun, and one of the best interviews I’ve done.
