Last October, when Shauna and I were in Las Vegas doing research for the WSOP Final Table, we had dinner with Andy Bloch. Andy was in the process of trying to win a bet with Chris Ferguson. They bet $1,000 with Andy getting 10-to-1 odds that Andy couldn’t get “six-pack abs” by the end of the year. This led me on a venture that had the potential to make me two separate fortunes. Three months later, I’m lamenting the loss of two sweet opportunities while choking down a flavorless bread stick.

Tuesday’s earthquake in Haiti has created a humanitarian crisis of gigantic proportions. It has been estimated that 100,000 people have died there this week and, according to a Haitian Senator, that figure could reach 500,000. The International Red Cross has said that 3 million people, one-third of the population, may need emergency relief. What you plan to do about this depends on your financial abilities and your conscience but Full Tilt Poker wants to help you help Haiti.

Here’s what I found out in the last few hours: being smart and responsible and thorough usually gets you what you want in your professional life. But only usually. Sometimes you have to be a whiny little bitch to accomplish anything. After a few hours of behaving like the world owed me an explanation for why Andy Beal touched a deck of cards and I didn’t know about it, I got one.

I’m just not smart enough to figure out the logic.
I’ve had two pros tell me they heard Andy Beal was in the Bellagio poker room two nights ago playing a limit hold-em ring game. As far as I know, neither was in the game, but both sources have been extremely reliable in the past. One source told me they were playing $1,000-$2,000.

Google sends me an alert whenever something appears online mentioning my name and Andy Beal’s. (Mostly, it’s a way for me to collect reviews and comments from readers of SUICIDE KING.) Over the past day and a half, there has been a thread on the Two-Plus-Two forum titled “Andy Beal Back in Town?”
You have to admit, that’s a pretty eye-catching title. The first post in the thread sounds authoritative:

It took me some time to wind down after the May thru July spectacle of the World Series. Nevertheless, I was able to take you along on some interesting adventures these last few months. In addition, I was able to spend my time at home developing my online game (and hopefully, at least a little bit, yours) and write several profiles of Full Tilt’s most compelling pros. Anchoring the last few months, of course, was Shauna’s and my coverage of the Final Table at the WSOP at the Main Event.

[thanks to B.J. Nemeth for taking this image]
I took a more methodical approach to covering the 2009 World Series of Poker than in 2007 or 2008. For one thing, Full Tilt had hired Shauna as my assistant, to help produce the blog and expand my reach for keeping current on all the Full Tilt pros and their World Series experiences. As a result, I divided my posts into four categories:

It was with great reluctance that I said good-bye to 2009. I had a dreadful year playing poker online, but even that was not without its highlights. I had a great time at the World Series last summer working with Shauna and had my best-ever finish, runner-up to Jeffrey Lisandro in the Razz. And I feel like I showed that I was still at the top of my game in covering the Final Table of the Main Event. But because I was LIVING all these things (or at least writing them), I didn’t reflect much on whether they made good literature.
