Allen Cunningham hosted the FTOPS XV Main Event last Sunday, so I tuned in for his Pro Chat. Like Erik Seidel, Cunningham is smart and witty, but his reluctance to become a public figure has kept his personality carefully hidden. I know Allen a little, not well, and was curious how he would appear in the Chat.

I made sure to watch Gavin Smith’s Pro Chat on February 15. As I’ve written before, ANYTHING can come out of Gavin Smith’s mouth. I expected nothing less in the Pro Chat and was not disappointed.

FTOPS XV is now officially in the books. It was a rare winning series for me, not that I am particularly happy about it. For me, the lingering memory will be busting out of the Main Event after flopping a set, only to lose to a player who flopped a higher set and made quads on the river out of what I thought was my can’t-miss full house. But there were some good moments, and two of my friends, Dr Fill Good and yuvee04, won events.

[This is the conclusion of my cyber-adventures during the first event of FTOPS XV. I have plenty to report on OTHER FTOPS events, but I’m focusing first on the initial event because (a) a lot of interesting things happened, and (b) I still had high hopes for FTOPS, undimmed by actual results.]
THE “F” IN FTOPS IS FOR “FRANTIC”
Just before the first break they finally closed off entries. A total of 5,645 players entered, creating a prize pool of $1,129,200. This is impressive because it’s a Wednesday night. It’s also impressive because it’s an EVENING on Wednesday, meaning that Full Tilt’s growing international contingent of players are largely not present. In contrast, a Sunday afternoon tournament will get a large number of U.S. players (where it’s afternoon), and still draw lots of players from Europe (where it’s evening). The tournament pays 720 places, with first place bringing in $193,093.20.

[This is the continuation of my account of Event #1, from Wednesday, February 10. In the first two parts, I provided the traditional “media coverage” angle, letting you know who did what and how. Because I recognize that information is available from other web sites that cover FTOPS, plus in the results themselves, I wanted to contrast that with my more personal view. Specifically, I want to share my perspective on the challenges of playing in and covering an online poker tournament – especially one in which I have an expensive and futile history.]
For once I am off to a good start in FTOPS, winning one of my first satellites into the opening event, the $200 + $16 NLHE hosted by Erik Seidel, with a guaranteed prize pool of at least $1 million.

I was pleased to see that the music community picked up “We Are the World” for its efforts to provide relief and rebuilding support for earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Prior to Michael Jackson’s death last summer, a pet project of mine had been plotting (plodding?) along on a book about the original song, how it came together, who benefited from the 1985 effort, and some interesting things that happened in connection with that charitable effort in the aftermath.
But all that is just introduction to the real reason for this post: the World Poker Tour (and, similarly, the poker world) has converged on Los Angeles. A pair of worthy charitable efforts – the WPT Celebrity Invitational (and its charity partner Chrysalis) and The Fallen Heroes Fund Fourth Annual Memorial Poker Tournament – should be on your schedule if you are in LA, and maybe even if you aren’t.

It’s only natural when I write about FTOPS to focus on the losers. AS I write this, I have played in three of the four FTOPS events and busted out of $900 worth of FTOPS before the first break hit in weird, fluky, unlikely ways. But I should recognize there is at least the POSSIBILITY of striking it rich. Indeed, it’s the only thing that keeps me going.
