ACmuffinTHINKING #972 Allen Cunningham is Funnier Than You Would Imagine

Allen Cunningham hosted the FTOPS XV Main Event last Sunday, so I tuned in for his Pro Chat. Like Erik Seidel, Cunningham is smart and witty, but his reluctance to become a public figure has kept his personality carefully hidden. I know Allen a little, not well, and was curious how he would appear in the Chat.

He started the chat the way you would expect:  he was solid and predictable.

Q:  What does it take to make it as a professional?

AC:  Mostly skill.

Q:  It seems like you’re posting more consistent results on line rather than live. What is the reason for your recent dip in live tournaments?

AC:  I’m doing fine live.

Q:  What’s your tourney strategy here?  Loose in the beginning or tight?

AC:  Play my best all the way through.

Nothing to write home (or in the blog) about.

Even though Allen stayed for just an hour, he soon couldn’t help but reveal his playful side. Within the first ten questions, he was asked, “How often do you get bad beats?” Allen’s answer: “17.”

It was soon clear that Allen was playing for laughs and he knew what he was doing.  Easy_fold_K asked, “How do you decide when a session is over?” Cunningham replied, “When I’ve lost all my money.”

If I had to summarize everything I know about Allen Cunningham’s brain in one word, it would be remarkably easy: mischievous. One player asked, “I just started playing NL after two years of FL. In my first month I achieved 10 BB/hr. How should I handle early success after earning nearly five digit success in my first month?”

Cunningham told him, “Talk about it when trying to pick up girls.”

I already knew that Allen and I were both left-handed. From the Pro Chat, I learned we had something else in common: we both worked delivering pizzas. (One of the best jobs I ever had, and a training ground for almost every job I’ve had since.) After revealing this, he shared a joke that’s been around longer than Domino’s. “How do you get a professional poker player off of your doorstep? Pay him for the pizza.”

When players asked questions with no answer or requiring a goofy one, Allen Cunningham was up to the task.

Q:  You remember when we were playing Chinese Poker and we each one two million?

AC:  I rarely have a win that small.

Q: Have we seen the max field a WSOP can reach? Or could the field go even higher?

AC:  Eleventy milliondy.

Allen also had a sense of humor about his having been around poker so long for being a relatively young man.  I3satard asked, “So I don’t really know too much about you like your game but did you start online or live?” Allen gently explained, “I started live before online existed. Way back when the year started with a one.”

I was especially impressed with the perspective he provided in one of his final answers. OMGScarface asked, “Allen when you started to play poker did you think you could go as far as you did?”

AC’s answer was perfect: “No. This far didn’t even exist then.”

His comments made me laugh…especially the “When I’ve lost all my money.” bit, since this is what usually happens to player… :D

I’ve always had so much respect for Allen, he reminds me of myself I guess, Calm, Quiet, Deep Thinker.
