While sitting next to Joe Reitman as Annie Duke and Andy Bloch battled in the first round of the NBC Heads-Up Championship, I thought I saw Joe’s ex-wife, Shannon Elizabeth, on the far side of the room and pointed her out.
It wasn’t inconceivable that Shannon Elizabeth would be here. Shannon, who made the semifinals of the HUC in 2007, was friends with Antonio Esfandiari, who was playing the featured match against Sam Farha. She was also hosting a party at PURE that night. (That’s how I was cleverly able to work a poster of Shannon Elizabeth – cleavage included – at the top of this post.)
Joe looked up. (I’m pretty sure he was Tweeting.) “Where?”
“Across the room, next to Antonio Esfandiari’s dad.”
Because we were sitting at floor-level and our view was obscured by people walking around, camera equipment, and tall fake pillars on the set designed to obscure people walking around and camera equipment.
“I can’t see anything over there.”
I tried to direct his vision by pointing. “Second row, pink tee shirt.”
Unfortunately, at the moment Reitman looked in the proper direction, the woman turned to talk to someone over her right shoulder.
“I can’t see her face,” he told me, “but I can tell from the bottom of her ear that it’s not Shannon.” With that, he dismissed me and returned to his Tweeting.
So Joe Reitman – who used to be married to one of the most perfect-featured women I’ve ever met, and is now living with one of my best female friends – can identify his ex-wife by the sight of her left earlobe from seventy-five feet away.
Then it hit me: I idolize Joe Reitman. He is, if not the Alpha Male, the Alpha Guy.
