It’s been nearly two weeks since I posted to the Blog, a gap that is uncharacteristic but, perhaps, predictable. The World Series of Poker was a grind and, though I didn’t fill the Blog with coverage on the Main Event after my elimination, my involvement in and writing about the Ted Forrest-Mike Matusow $2 million weight-loss prop bet kept me very busy at the end. Not that I’m complaining: it was a dream job, with two of my closest friends in poker, two of the most interesting and unusual personalities in the game, on opposite sides of an historic, bizarre proposition bet.
The idea, when the final nine players in the Main Event dispersed in predawn hours on July 18, was that I – along with Shauna, Heather, Al, Dave McCarthy, Full Tilt’s entire WSOP team, all Full Tilt’s pros, and all of poker for that matter – would take a relaxing vacation and return a short time later, tanned, rested, and ready to resume the around-the-clock, around-the-world business of sharing the lives and games of professional poker players with the Full Tilt InterReaderVerse.
I, for one, left plenty of work to do: untold and still-developing stories from the Forrest-Matusow saga (like, how is Matusow going to make good on his $2 million debt, a matter on which I am currently involved, at least indirectly); other great stories from the World Series of Poker I simply never had time to tell; an analysis of the World Series as a whole (like who won the WSOP Fight Club, who were the big surprises and disappointments, and what we learned about poker from this year’s spectacle); and starting coverage of Full Tilt’s pros who made the November Nine.
I took ten days away from work, but it was far from a vacation. When I came home, my wonderful wife of twenty-nine years, Jo Anne, did NOT say, “You poor thing, away from home and hearth for seven weeks, you must be exhausted. Let me make sure, o breadwinner, that you get the rest and rejuvenation you dearly need.”
It was more like, “While you’ve been free from the burdens of the house and three kids since the end of May, I’ve been house-maid, nurse, and chauffeur. I’m taking a break while you run the family shuttle to camp, doctors, colleges, and the vet. Finish dealing with the insurance on Ellie’s 3 AM auto accident, get her a car, and make sure you attend Val’s camp performance Remember to take Val to camp, Barry to the doctor, and Ellie needs a car. And you should probably do something about the two months of bills piled up on your desk.”
On the positive side, after ten days of re-immersion in family life, I’m anxious to get back to Gulag Full Tilt.
Uncle Tilty, show me your worst!

August 1st, 2010 at 3:37 pmWell I know I read that Mike had stated when this bet was placed, that if he lost, Ted would collect but it would probably take 20 years to get it. I’m sure Mike has some cash laying around but not 2 mill to just ship to him.
