Beginning next Monday May 2nd Red Pros will be hosting tournaments for readers of the blog.
Our first tournament will be a No Limit Holdem $1 +.10 buy-in and we will add $100 to the prize pool.

If you could give one piece of advice to people starting out in poker what would it be:
Be patient and take your time in low limits to work on your game. And keep always an eye on a solid bankroll management, this is the basic of successful poker.

I have often been asked, “What is the smallest pair you would play on third street in seven card stud?”
Before this question can be answered in detail, it is important to understand some different elements that will guide you to the true strength of your hand. Firstly consider the size of your pair. It should be obvious that the higher it is, the better it is, but the most critical factor is how high is it in comparison to the expected strength of your opponents.
As a simple example, consider a board where your opponents up cards (door cards) are A, K, Q, J, T, 9, and your hand is a pair of Eights.
You are first to act after a 2 opens the action (bring in) on your right. Any one of six opponents will have you beat if they have a pair and therefore your two eights should be thrown away.
Now consider a board where your opponents up cards (door cards) are 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 3, and again you have a pair of eights with a 2 opening the action (bring in) on your right. Now you have the highest card on the board, and you beat any split pair your opponents may have. In these circumstances it becomes correct to raise.
Of course in a real game things will often not be quite as clear cut, but the principle of raising with a split pair when there is only one or preferably no higher card than your own on the board, is a very sound one.
It should be apparent that the question “would you call with a pair of eights” cannot be correctly answered without additional information.
Next week I will consider a number of other factors that will help determine whether to fold, call or raise with a split pair on third street.

Full Tilters to Visit Troops in Middle East
It was announced last week that Full Tilt Pros Howard Lederer, Tom Dwan, and Huck Seed agreed to head overseas to visit the U.S. troops stationed in the Middle East. The visit is a part of the USO and Armed Forces Entertainment Poker Tour.
Along with Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth, the Pros will spend a week with the troops answering questions, giving poker strategy tips, as well as posing for photographs and signing autographs. Due to security reasons, the exact dates and locations cannot be released at this time.
High Stakes PLO Takes Place on Poker After Dark
All this week on Poker After Dark, there will be a $100,000 buy-in pot-limit Omaha cash game running. The action figures to be exciting with a lineup full of high stakes professionals which includes Full Tilt Pros Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, Brandon Adams, Brian Hastings, and Tom Dwan. The five Full Tilt Sponsored players will be joined by well-respected high stakes online pro Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond. Poker After Dark airs each week at 2:05 am on NBC.
Dwan Takes Down Idols Week Title
Last week wrapped up the first week of new Poker After Dark shows and it pitted the new young breed of poker pros against a true legend of the game, Doyle Brunson, in a $50,000 tournament called “Idols Week.”
Brunson was joined by Full Tilt Pros Tom Dwan, Andrew Lichtenberger, Annette Obrestad, and Melanie Weisner. Eric “Basebaldy” Baldwin rounded out the table of young pros and Brunson. Brunson did not last very long, however, as the oldest player at the table was the first one to be eliminated. Weisner then went on to eliminate Obrestad, but did not last long after that. Lichtenberger busted in third and that left Baldwin and Dwan heads-up for the $300,000 first place prize money. Dwan really turned up the heat and eventually got the best of Baldwin to pocket $300,000 and show why he is one of the most feared players in the game today.
Nosebleed Action
According to highstakesdb.com, Gus Hansen had a rough week, losing $383,832 over just 666 hands. Hansen played most of his hands at $300/$600 pot-limit Omaha against “NoPasaran.”
In one of the bigger hands played this week, NoPasaran raised to $1,200 on the button and Hansen three-bet to $3,600. Pasaran called and the flop came Ad-Kd-10d. Hansen led out for $7,200 and was raised to $22,800 by NoPasaran. Hansen moved all-in for just over $70,000 and was called. Pasaran showed the 8d-4c-Jc-3d and Hansen showed the 3h-4d-5s-6d. Both players flopped a flush, but Pasaran held the higher flush. The turn and river were run twice, but both times Pasaran’s higher flush held up and he took down a pot of more than $140,000.
Despite this week’s losses, highstakesdb.com still has Hansen as the biggest winner on the year with profits of more than $3.1 million.

Roberto Romanello Wins WPT Bratislava
Red Pro Roberto Romanello conquered a field of 211 players to take down the WPT Bratislava event and the $140,685 first place prize. This championship comes just a couple months after Romanello was crowned the European Poker Tour Prague champion for just over $640,000. Along with the bracelet and the prize money, Romanello also won a seat to the $25,000 WPT Championship event.
Romanello entered the final with a commanding chip lead, having 1.8 million of the 6.4 million in play. He was able to maneuver his chips well throughout the final table to get him heads-up against Mayu Roca. After a two-hour heads-up battle, Romanello and Roca got all of the chips in the middle with Romanello holding pocket fives and Roca tabling A-K. The board ran out J-6-8-3-Q and Romanello’s pocket fives held up to give him the title. The Welshman’s career tournament earnings have now eclipsed $1.9 million.
With the WPT win, Romanello now has a chance this summer to join Roland de Wolfe and Gavin Griffin as the third player to complete poker’s triple crown. The triple crown consists of a WPT, an EPT, and a WSOP championship.

Jennifer Harman Hosting Charity Tournament
On Saturday, May 21, Team Full Tilt Pro Jennifer Harman will be hosting the 5th Annual Throw Down Charity Poker Tournament at the Peppermill Resort Casino in Reno, Nevada. The tournament will be run in conjunction with the Heartland Poker Tour’s Nevada State Poker Championship and will be nationally televised. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Nevada SPCA, a no-kill animal sanctuary and private nonprofit organization.
There will be bounties on 100 pros and celebrities who have already guaranteed their appearance, more than 100 individual prizes awarded, and there will also be bonuses such as being the last woman standing and having your aces cracked. You can compete as part of a team or as an individual for just $230. Jungleman Extends Lead on Durrrr
On March 29, Daniel “Jungleman12” Cates and Tom Dwan continued the second edition of the Durrrr Challenge. They played 1,099 hands and just as most of the previous matches, Cates came out on top. Cates added another $39,797 to his lead. This makes his lead on Dwan just over $1.2 million with 19,335 hands completed of the 50,000 hands needed to complete the challenge.
Even though Dwan ended the session down, the largest pot of the session did go his way. Dwan raised the button to $1,200 and Cates three-bet to $4,800 from the big blind. Dwan made the call and the flop came Kd-Jh-7c. Cates bet $4,800 and Dwan called and the 9s fell on the turn. Cates bet $14,400 and Dwan made the call again. The river was the 6h and Cates continued to turn up the heat as he moved all-in, forcing Dwan to call off his last $30,287. Dwan called off the last of his money and showed 10s-7s, good for just fourth pair on the board. Durrrr was right though, as Cates showed Qc-5c, giving him nothing but queen high. Red Pros Make Final Tables
Red Pros Steve Brecher and Allesio Isaia each made final tables this past week. Isaia made the final table of WPT Vienna, while Brecher made the final table of the World Series of Poker Circuit Western Regional Championship in San Diego, California.
Isaia finished in seventh place, netting $49,100 for his efforts. This brings his live tournament earnings to $1.375 million and he currently sits in fifth place in the Bluff Magazine 2011 Player of the Year Race.
Brecher finished in fourth place, good for $90,223. He navigated a tough final table which included pros Dwyte Pilgrim, Ali Eslami, Tim West, and David Peters. Brecher was eliminated when Eslami, West, and Brecher saw a flop of Kh-9d-4h. West and Brecher checked, Eslami bet 30,000 and Brecher check-raised all-in for 155,000. Eslami made the call and showed Kc-Qd and was way ahead of Brecher’s Ks-8d. The turn and river brought no help for Brecher to eliminate him in fourth place. Brecher’s live tournament earnings now exceed $1.7 million.
