If you could give one piece of advice to people starting out in poker what would it be: If you want to get better, playing a lot is a start, but you also need to study and think about poker strategy whenever possible, simply live poker.
Most interesting thing you did in the last week: It’s been an online poker week for me, so the most interesting thing was a fairly big winning day at Full Tilt Poker.
Finish the sentence “if I wasn’t playing poker I would be…” a PHD student.

Buried Pairs (Part 1)
Buried pairs should be played slightly differently to split pairs.
One important reason for playing a buried (hidden) pair is because when you are lucky enough to hit trips, the huge strength of your hand will not be immediately apparent to your opponents.
Suppose you play a hand such as (J6)J with the (J6) being your hole cards, and subsequently catch a jack on fourth street (J6)JJ, it won’t be too difficult for your opponents to work out your most likely hand is three jacks. Suppose instead you play (JJ)6 where your door card is a 6 and again you catch a J on fourth street (JJ)6J. Now your opponents will have no idea about the true strength of your hand. This should result in you winning many more bets with this particular hand. Note that the starting hand is exactly the same in both cases, two jacks with a 6 kicker. The chances of catching a third jack are exactly the same in both cases, but in the second case will be much more devastating for your opponents because your true strength is very well disguised.
Thus buried pairs should be played whenever possible and this includes small pairs. It is correct to call a raise with a small buried pair but not with a small split pair.(See exceptions explained previously). Do not take this to an extreme and start calling double raises with small or medium buried pairs. You will not catch trips frequently enough to make this a winning play.
