The Elder called out the payouts for which they will be playing. I was surprised it wasn’t winner-take-all, especially when the Elder suggested the possibility of negotiated payouts among contenders.) “$150,000 for first, $50,000 for second, $25,000 for third.” Eli E was eth first to shout down the host. “$150,000 for first? Is there a house fee of $50,000 that we didn’t know about?”
The Elder quickly looked at the numbers, embarrassed. “Sorry. $200,000 for first, $50,000 for second, and $25,000 for third.”

Before the draft and auction even started, team captains faced some disagreements over the rules. Howard Lederer announced that, in response to Barry Greenstein’s request, the Seniors and Ladies events would count in the standings. There was general moaning and groaning, ended by Daniel Negreanu saying, “Those events aren’t real. The bracelets aren’t real.” (I don’t know how this was resolved.)

Chau Giang saw me there. Chau sees everything. “Michael, did you have a good time last night?” I nodded and asked him the same question, aware that I was able to lurk in the shadows for free in the name of investigative journalism, while he paid $25,000 to attend.

On Thursday night, twelve of the world’s biggest gamblers will convene in Las Vegas and WSOP Fight Club will commence. WSOP Fight Club’s Commissioner, a man known in the group only as “the Elder” told each participant: “The first rule of WSOP Fight Club is that nobody talks about WSOP Fight Club.”
Luckily, somebody broke that rule.
