[This is my final post in the series about the 2010 NBC Heads-Up Championship. NBC started broadcasting the matches two weeks ago, with an hour of coverage on April 18, following that up with two hours last Sunday, the 25th. Today and the following two Sundays (May 2, 9, and 16), you can see another two hours per week of the HUC. Broadcast coverage wraps up on NBC with three hours on Sunday, May 23. Following this post, I will write another entry helping you organize and access the posts, if you want to read them serially or in conjunction with the NBC schedule. Whether good or bad, I’d like to hear your comments about my coverage, both in general and in comparison with what you’re watching on NBC. You can post comments after the blog, or e-mail me at mrchaotic@aol.com. (I’d prefer you post your comments, but I just want to hear from you!)]

Annie Duke vs. Erik Seidel in the final? For me, it’s a dream match-up. Erik is part of Team Full Tilt and a friend of mine, so it’s good for business that he made the championship match. Because Seidel is such a sphinx, I regard myself an expert on him even though I don’t know all that much. The important thing is everyone else knows less. There must be a way that I can turn all this knowledge into money, or at least fame.

The second half of the quarterfinals pitted Doyle Brunson against Dennis Phillips and Annie Duke against Jerry Yang. Doyle and Dennis were at the main TV Table, so I had a better view of Annie and Jerry. For me, therefore, the story was all about the unusual Duke-Yang pairing. Dennis Phillip’s impressive win over Doyle Brunson, from my vantage point, was like a distant radio signal that periodically cut in and interrupted the show I was watching.

Scotty Nguyen defeated Jason Mercier to make the semi-finals. Erik Seidel won over Peter Eastgate, and the two will play for a spot in the finals. Nobody left in the tournament has seriously contended for the Heads-Up Championship before, but for me, it all seems like déjà vu.

It’s great that NBC, starting last Sunday, is showing the Heads-Up Championship matches that I’ve been writing about since they took place. If I get a schedule together, I’ll try to give you a listing of what weeks they will be showing you the matches from what particular posts. In the meantime, let’s summarize the action because I’m near the final eight players, which is where NBC will focus a lot of its attention and coverage. The first fifteen posts concerned the Round of 64 (“Day of the Dog” I-III, “Take These Broken Wingmen and Learn to Play” I-IV) and the Round of 32 (“The Money Round” I-V).

While sitting next to Joe Reitman as Annie Duke and Andy Bloch battled in the first round of the NBC Heads-Up Championship, I thought I saw Joe’s ex-wife, Shannon Elizabeth, on the far side of the room and pointed her out.

[The issue of the Blog spacing have been fixed, and you'll be pleased to know I have a healthy backlog of high-quality posts. Therefore, I continue with my coverage of the NBC Heads-Up Championship.]
There is an old expression that goes, “Where you stand depends on where you sit.” I never knew what this meant but always assumed it was true, if only because it could mean almost anything. During the first round of the NBC National Heads-Up Championship on March 5, however, I discovered it was not only true but full of wisdom.

By consensus vote, Friday’s second first-round bracket, Diamonds, had the most talent and the most difficult match-ups. Barry Greenstein, 5-0 in the first round, faced Vanessa Rousso, last year’s runner-up. Annie Duke, though never a threat in the HUC, drew Andy Bloch, in a match that promised to pit not only friends but similar styles. Others in the bracket included the occasionally cursed Sam Farha, Jennifer Harman, Mike Matusow, 2007 champion Paul Wasicka, Gus Hansen, and Greg Raymer. (Hansen and Raymer were matched against each other.)

You will note two interesting things about this picture. First, it was taken before Annie Duke’s first round match with Andy Bloch. That makes it a “before” picture in every sense of the word. Second, the gent with the long sideburns next to Andy’s right shoulder is Paul Wasicka. Please notice, though it is not a strong image of Paul, the absence of (a) worry lines or (b) a dark cloud. In that so much of my coverage of the NBC Heads-Up Championship – most of which, granted, I haven’t posted and some of which I haven’t even written – is about curses, karma, and cosmic equations, there really should be a dark cloud.
