Here I’m calling Erik “The Wombat” because he has a small stuffed wombat sitting on his chips He’s been telling people how much he enjoyed going to a wild animal park where he got to hold a baby wombat. He found it “cuddly.” I’m calling Alexander Kostritsyn, the chip leader in heads-up play, AK-47, because, well, he’s Russian and he keeps firing. Kind of lame and obvious, I know.
Bad nicknames, maybe, but the action is great.

The gamesmanship for tonight’s big cash game started well before the cards were in the air. The players – Patrik Antonius, Niki Jedlicka, Tony G, Chris Ferguson, Gus Hansen, John Juanda, and Eli Elezra – were seated at the table for a good 45 minutes before the game got going. In that time they chatted about how deep they were prepared to play. The blinds were 400/800, with a 100 ante, and most started with 100k. Patrik started deeper, with about 250k, and the game didn’t start until he loaned Ferguson, who was waiting for chips from the cage, 100k.

Patrik and Eli immediately started talking about a straddle. They were goading the other players to commit to a permanent $1,600 straddle. But not everyone was interested. “Oh,” said Antonius, “you guys want this to be a boring game. That’s not right.”

Today is a very busy day in the Poker Room at the Crown Casino. The world’s most expensive tournament—a $100,000 buy-in—started early this afternoon. Not surprisingly, the lineup is phenomenal. Table 3, for example, includes Howard Lederer, Erick Lindgren, Allen Cunningham, Dan Shak, and Phil Ivey. The other tables are no easier.
But I’m going to ignore this premier event so that I can introduce a pro few of you know–Amanda Baker, or as her friends call her, Mandy B.

Yesterday two busloads of pros and online qualifiers headed to one of Australia’s nicest golf courses, the Capital Golf Club. Those taking to the links could play 18 holes, or a much as they could stand before the 41-degree Celsius heat – that’s 106 Fahrenheit – forced them to the clubhouse.

In the picture below, you can see two of the Full Tilt online qualifiers for the Aussie Millions. On the far right of the picture is diplomat, and on the far left is shaniac.

diplomat is a poker hobbiest. An improv actor form LA, he plays the occasional live tournament at the Bike or Commerce. This is his second big buy-in tournament; his first was the 2006 WSOP, for which he qualified through Full Tilt. He got into the Aussie Millions through player points. He didn’t spend a dime to get here.
shaniac is a full-time pro. He’s one of the highest-rated online tournament players, and he’s well-respected on the tournament circuit. He had a WSOP final table in 2005, and he’s had several deep finishes in big tournaments. He also writes a blog about his poker experiences.
These are two players who both play on Full Tilt, but poker means very different things to these guys. One’s a hobbiest, and one’s a pro. And here they are.
How these and other qualifiers doing? Let’s have a look:
