The two semifinalists from the morning round, Andy Bloch and Huckleberry Seed, are both red pros. Three of the four in the afternoon quarterfinals are Team Tilters, Ivey/Hansen and Chris Ferguson. Jonathan Little is also wearing the colors. So when they announced it was time to take the team picture, the picture of all the competitors at the start of the match, it really WAS a team picture.

This was a wild day of poker at the Heads-Up Championship. We’re down to eight players and what a concentration of world-class talents we have.

Here’s the line-up for the Sunday quarterfinals:

February 29 comes only once every four years. Maybe that means we should expect unusual things to occur. It’s not much of an explanation, but it’s better than “internet poker is rigged” when similar things happen online. Between writing up the information from the Diamonds bracket and, frankly, being stunned by what happened to Phil Hellmuth, it wasn’t until about 6:25 PM, about 75 minutes in, that I really caught up with the action in the Clubs bracket. Six of the eight matches were still going on.

When I’m at the World Series, I wish I was home. When I’m home, I wish I was at the World Series. There are a lot of different types of players in a lot of different situations at the Series. My situation is unique, but it shares elements with most of the thousands and thousands playing this year. Integrating the World Series of Poker into your life is difficult.

It’s tough to play and it’s tough not to play.

TRAGEDY – When something bad happens.

REAL TRAGEDY – When something bad happens and you can’t blog it.

Just before noon today, on my way to watching two final tables featuring several of my friends, I discovered that someone had broken into my car. They busted through the front driver-side window and took the navigation system and some copies of the FULL TILT book.

I think I understand why Harrah’s is screwing up so much at this World Series.

The Tiger and the Iceman

Leaving the Bellagio on Monday, April 9, I stopped for breakfast in the hotel. I always feel awkward eating alone and usually bring something to read. But my car was packed to the gills and I walked in empty handed. Luckily, I found a copy of M Magazine, “the lifestyle magazine of MGM Mirage.” There was a Q & A with Tiger Woods about his TigerJam charity event, scheduled this year for May 26 at Mandalay Bay.

This is the first part of an unscheduled, irregular multi-part series about the legal status of online poker. [Because “Mr. D’Amato Goes to Washington” is over 4,000 words, I have broken up Part I into four parts, all of which are being posted the evening of March 8.] The goal is NOT to tell you that the people who oppose the activity we enjoy so much are idiots and assholes. I’ll give you credit for already knowing that.
