I don’t know if Tony Holden was kidding when he mentioned over breakfast that David “Devilfish” Ulliott had been spotted at the Rio asking about me. I couldn’t afford the luxury of joviality, only of flight. After making (phony) plans to meet Holden at the Mirage Showroom to throw those Englishmen – assuming they are all in league – off my scent, I hightailed it to the Venetian.

In the second pair of brackets today, Clubs/Spades, all but one of the matches ended in 70 minutes and without as much weird action has the Diamonds/Hearts round of 32. I was saving up my round-up notes for the end of the day but let me share what I’ve written about the Clubs/Spades earlier:

I finally finished my cover feature on Phil Hellmuth winning his eleventh bracelet for BLUFF. It ended in a marathon session in which I spent 24 straight hours in my room, ending at about 4:20 PM on Sunday. That left me just enough time to buy into the 5 PM event, $1,500 Mixed Hold ‘Em, but not enough time to think about it. If it turned out to be a mistake, there would be time for that later.

Or, In the Belly (Ring) of the Beast

Thomas Wolfe notwithstanding, you can go home again. At least, I was determined to try. After being pelted with at least 75 angry e-mails and observer chat flames for turning down the spare bedroom in the house occupied by Clonie Gowen and Shannon Elizabeth for the World Series of Poker, I was going to make an attempt to set things right (at least by Guy Standards). Incidentally, fellas, the offer was non-transferable, so stop asking me if they’ll let YOU have a sleepover. But rest easy with the knowledge that if I accommodated every request, that bedroom would be more crowded with desperate men than a Turkish prison.

I busted out of the $2000 NLHE event at about 11 PM, finishing ahead of about 1300 of the 1500 entrants but, unfortunately, not in the money. The hour after the dinner break was a disaster and I went from 29,000 chips to 12,000. I picked up the blinds once and split a pot when someone called my all-in with A-T. The hand I went out on featured slowplayed aces, me making three kings, and a guy with pocket nines making a full house.

Andy Bloch busted right after me, but Clonie was doing great when I left her in the Amazon Room.

Earth Man, Pretty Woman

On Saturday night, I got to visit with Richard Brodie and share a cigar. He called me up and told me he had a last minute opening for me to join him at some ultra-luxe VIP event at the Wynn. I was wearing shorts and sandals and playing a slot machine, so I raced upstairs to change, then to the car, then through traffic, then through the Wynn to the far-off banquet room where the event was being held. Brodie called me twice to ask what was taking so long.

I’m interrupting the remainder of my Bellagio Five Star adventure because I noticed yesterday that the new FTOPS are on the Full Tilt tournament schedule. I’ve also noticed that the rajahs running Full Tilt were nice enough to put me in red. Because of my sorry showing in the last FTOPS – I played every event but one and never finished in the money, an escapade that cost me a couple grand – I am bucking conventional wisdom and common sense and calling my shot:

THE NEW, RED MICHAEL CRAIG [note the conceit of referring to myself in third person] WILL MAKE A MARK IN THESE FTOPS!

Paul Wasicka defeated Chad Brown in consecutive matches last night to win the third NBC Heads-Up Championship. It was an impressive-looking performance, even more so because I watched from the NBC production truck so I could see all the cards. Wasicka played a very tricky game and a very gutsy game. The live updates from www.pokerwire.com and, of course, the NBC broadcasts on seven Sundays in April and May will give you a better feel of the hand-for-hand stuff. I hope the thousands of words I spent on the tournament gave you some feeling for what it was like in the tournament room, some info about the combatants, and a little of what I picked up about heads-up play. These are things from my notes that I didn’t share over the weekend, before we leave the 3rd Heads-Up Championship to history and the airwaves.

It’s 11:15 AM as I am writing this. The broadcasters are doing their taped opening for the first two quarterfinal matches – Shannon Elizabeth v. Humberto Brenes and Paul Wasicka v. Nam Le. Shannon Elizabeth has kicked me out of my front row seat to make room for Antonio Esfandiari’s father, banishing me to the back row of the bleachers.

All part of the plan.

I took my seat in the corner of the bleachers by table 3 for the diamonds bracket, the fourth heat of the day. There were no shortage of interesting match-ups by I wanted to watch Clonie Gowen and Kristy Gazes play close up. The Storm vs. The Gaze. It was a Tilt Eat Tilt world, like much of the fourth heat. Don Cheadle and Phil Ivey, the feature table, were both wearing the Tilt logo. So were Howard Lederer and Brad Booth. And so were Chad Brown and Yosh Nakano.
