As I drove into town Thursday afternoon, I called Clonie Gowen to ask if she wanted to come with me to Fashion Show Mall. I had two baggage errands to run. ”Me and Shannon have to get scanned for an Activision poker game but if you’re by in a half hour, we’d love to come to the mall with you.”

Well okay then.

What if they called a war and no one showed up? Poker is constantly flirting with that possibility. As it gets bigger and bigger, and as the risks to poker’s future expand, I always wonder, at least a little, if this is when the bubble pops, when we all look a little goofy going so crazy over a game of cards.

The Heads-Up Championship is an especially thin-skinned balloon. It’s Big Time TV. They do everything first class. They act like a big sporting event is happening, populated by superstars and celebrities.

What if it falls flat? There was a distinct possiblity, I thought, when I was offered a chance to stand NEAR the red carpet before the pairings party on Thursday night.

Deep Thoughts and the Art of Hammer Maintenance

#003 Clonie Gowen’s Hammer TimeYou can get, on your Google home page, the streaming Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey. I was sold instantly by this bit of wisdom:

”If you go through a lot of hammers each month, I don’t think it necessarily means you’re a hard worker. It may just mean that you have a lot to learn about proper hammer maintenance.”

On Wednesday night I entered, as I frequently do, the Full Tilt Poker $35,000 Guarantee tournament. I noticed that Clonie Gowen had also entered, so I was watching how she was doing. (It would be a nice fantasy to believe she kept similar tabs on my progress, but that’s delusional even for me. She has asked me on multiple occasions for my screen name. It’s Michael Craig.)

Gowen Plays Poker with – but not in – a Vacuum

#003 Clonie Gowen’s Hammer TimeI went out early but occasionally looked to see how Clonie was doing. She plays, to the extent I know about it, a pretty solid game. Her stack wasn’t moving much. In fact, by the time the average was about 10,000, Clonie had 4,000. I left my computer for a few minutes to visit with my family – see, I truly am a loving husband and father – and when I returned, Clonie had 28,000.

On AOL, I instant-messaged her.

I am, to the concept of Full Tilt Poker, what Hugh Hefner was to Playboy in its early years. By that, I mean that I think my real life mirrors how the site is marketed to players.

Learn, chat, and play with the pros? That’s me, me, and me.
