My friend Melissa, the photographer whose boyfriend is Allen Cunningham, asked me to help her get together with Al Alvarez, famous English author, poet, and critic, and legendary in poker for writing THE BIGGEST GAME IN TOWN, the best book ever written about poker. I met Al last year through our mutual good friend Tony Holden (himself a famous English author, opera critic, and poker legend for penning BIG DEAL and, in 2007, BIGGER DEAL). I heard his health had declined but it was magical meeting him then. At 5’6″ and slightly stooped, I thought him a giant.

One of the virtues of the Wynn Classic was that it ran events other than No-Limit Hold ‘Em. This is true of many tournaments but with the popularity of NLHE, “giving the people what they want” has meant giving a large group what it wants most to the exclusion of one of poker’s greatest virtues: diversity. We are already seeing the big cash games online morph from NLHE to PLO. From what I hear, the big game in Bobby’s Room, when it’s really, really, REALLY big, will sometimes be NLHE and PLO, not the old-timey mix of HORSE games with some triple-draw or Chinese tossed in.

There was a HUGE turnout for Jennifer’s tournament. It looked like over 200 entries, and probably a quarter of them have World Series bracelets.
This was a gigantic money maker for a very worthy cause. Jennifer Harman is a real lover of animals. I’m not a vegetarian and I believe medical testing on animals is important to researching certain diseases. But the humane treatment of animals is one of those great causes with which no one can quarrel.
