By consensus vote, Friday’s second first-round bracket, Diamonds, had the most talent and the most difficult match-ups. Barry Greenstein, 5-0 in the first round, faced Vanessa Rousso, last year’s runner-up. Annie Duke, though never a threat in the HUC, drew Andy Bloch, in a match that promised to pit not only friends but similar styles. Others in the bracket included the occasionally cursed Sam Farha, Jennifer Harman, Mike Matusow, 2007 champion Paul Wasicka, Gus Hansen, and Greg Raymer. (Hansen and Raymer were matched against each other.)

At the Pairings Party for the 2010 NBC National Heads-Up Championship, there was general laughter at the announced pairing of Huckleberry Seed and Erik Seidel. Seidel has eight World Series of Poker bracelets, a WPT championship, and is generally regarded as one of the most successful tournament poker players of all-time. Because he keeps his superb intellect and wry sense of humor out of the spotlight, you rarely hear laughter at his expense.

Today is Friday, March 5, 2010 and it’s 12:40 PM PST as I write this. I am in the right corner of what is usually the Caesars Poker Tournament Room. It has been converted, identically to 2006-2009, to the studio set for the NBC National Heads-Up Championship. Although I had my moments last night, like every poker event I cover, when I wonder what I’m doing here and whether I have anything to contribute, I am excited to get started.

[This is the continuation of my account of Event #1, from Wednesday, February 10. In the first two parts, I provided the traditional “media coverage” angle, letting you know who did what and how. Because I recognize that information is available from other web sites that cover FTOPS, plus in the results themselves, I wanted to contrast that with my more personal view. Specifically, I want to share my perspective on the challenges of playing in and covering an online poker tournament – especially one in which I have an expensive and futile history.]
For once I am off to a good start in FTOPS, winning one of my first satellites into the opening event, the $200 + $16 NLHE hosted by Erik Seidel, with a guaranteed prize pool of at least $1 million.

This is the last part of my essay about the 2008 World Series of Poker. If I get a chance, I’ll review my notes from the Series and see if I have any other fun experiences to pass along. But otherwise, this is it for now.

The World Series of Poker has suddenly become very weight conscious. I was at a table with Howard Lederer in the $2,500 Mixed EOB event (more about that later) and he told me he got a call the night before at 3 AM from Erik Seidel.

The final table, according to Card Player’s web site, took 12 hours but heads-up play lasted only one hand. Erik Seidel, who began 3-handed play close in chips to Robert Richardson and Andrew Barta, became the most active player at the table, putting in small raises almost every hand. He took a substantial lead, yielded when challenged, and then crippled Barta when Andrew finally made a stand with A-Q. Erik had J-J and Barta was eliminated soon thereafter.

Even though I am 3000 miles from the action, I’ll feel like I’m part of the final table at the WPT Foxwoods Poker Classic when they finish the tournament on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Erik Seidel emerged as the chip leader at the final table, with Ted Forrest in second.
This could be a treat.

On Friday, I participated in the Jennifer Harman charity poker tournament to benefit the Nevada SPCA. These were my notes, prettied up a bit and better organized.

”Pure boys!”
For some reason, I remember that line from a high school play. I think it was MUSIC MAN, when the townspeople were expressing their concern about a new pool hall in town.
The pairings party for the heads-up championship was at PURE, the ultra cool nightclub at Caesars Palace, and it was a very nice event.
