MikeTedF One Wants to Die ... #1111 2010 WSOP #92

One wants to die. And he thinks the other could die. I’ve covered a lot of strange stories in poker. I saw Phil Ivey win $10 million in one day. I saw Andy Beal lose $8 million to Ted Forrest and then win it back. I visited Mike Matusow in jail. But those stories were nothing compared to the strangeness of this past evening. And I promise you, the next part of this story is way more strange than this part.  Read the rest of this entry »

LoneWriter On the Ted Forrest/Mike Matusow Beat #1110 2010 WSOP #91

I sometimes wonder if I’m using my skills to their greatest advantage, or if my work is properly appreciated. As weird and disturbing as this story is, I’m glad I’m here for it. And I hope you’re glad to. This is me, alone in the Pavilion Room at the Rio at 6:59pm today, trying to stay ahead of the story. Before I go to sleep tonight, I’ll post at least a brief version of the whole story, with pictures of BOTH weigh ins, when we “woke Mike Matusow the hell up,” and Ted’s first morsel of food in 11 days.

Keep watching this space! And tell others – this is really one of the most remarkable stories in gambling.

Here’s a tease: look below to get an idea of how close I got to this story.

TedMike1a Ted Forrest: I Wanted To Show That The Impossible Was Possible #1109 2010 WSOP #90

At 7:14pm, on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, Ted Forrest won one of the biggest bets in the history of wagering when he stepped on a scale on the stage at the Pavilion Room at the Rio Convention Center in Las Vegas and the number staring back at him was 138.0 pounds. The moment was numbing: exciting, exhilarating, alarming, anticlamactic. But Forrest swears he didn’t do it for the two million dollars. “Somebody I care about very much needed to see that the impossible is possible.”

I just finished spending 3 1/2 hours with Ted, his girlfriend Pui, his trainer Mike Santoro, and Mike Matusow. I’m going to write up as much of it as I can, as fast as I can.

As soon as I get something to eat.

See below for the picture of Ted on the scale. I was alarmed when I saw him there.

ENDGAME NOTES

In just a couple of hours, Ted Forrest will likely put an exclamation-point ending on one of the most remarkable bets in the history of gambling. Forrest is about to weigh himself for ESPN cameras, Mike Matusow, and Justin Smith. If his weight is 139.9 or less, Matusow and Smith have to pay him $2 million. I am so deeply embedded in this story that my preference would be to create a detailed, multi-part account, incorporating my well-researched history of weight bets, my own weight-loss bet experience, and, most important, my close friendships with both Forrest and Matusow, and their long, tangled history as friends and adversaries.

Russians11 Finale “Leave the HORSE, Take the Stromboli”, Part IX, Or, the Cold War Isn’t Over #1107 – 2010 WSOP #88

At least Al Barbieri made the final table. I kept an eye on the HORSE updates all evening and when I saw they were three-handed and Barbieri had the chip lead, I raced to the Rio for the finish. It looked like Al Barbieri was finally going to win his first gold bracelet and I wanted to be there when it happened.

chipjett “Leave the HORSE, Take the Stromboli”, Part VIII, The Worst Place to Finish #1107 – 2010 WSOP #88

Day 3 – Friday, June 18

At 2am on Friday, Chip Jett busted me in 31st place. If I was destined not to win the event – and with zero chips left and a Stromboli winding through my large intestine, it’s safe to say I was out of the running – Chip was one of my favorites. He has cashed 15 times at the WSOP since 2003 and twice finished as high as third place. In addition, with the memory of Karina’s unlucky fourth-place finish still fresh, a victory by Chip Jett might serve as evidence that, not only did the poker gods exist, but they were benevolent.

 PokerRoyale angle1 A Pen for Poker #1106 2010 WSOP #87

Not long ago Hawaiians Ozzy Thoreson and Evan Sherman were looking for a gift for a tournament director. They thought about giving him a pen but couldn’t find a nice poker-themed pen. Thus was born Pokerpens.com, a company they launched in June with four innovative products and more to come.
