Authors Note: Heads up, this is a very long one. In deep stacked slow blind tournaments that I actually stay in for a while that tends to happen.
Paris France, May 15th: The Aviation Club’s 10k Euro buy-in will technically be the largest buy-in tournament I’ve ever played. Despite this, I’m anticipating a very soft field given how few internet players have bothered to show up and the event isn’t televised.
Timex and Pacman have decided to play the main event, with Atimos and Will playing tomorrow. We make our way to the casino at half before 4 and kill a half hour lounging around. When we get to our seats it turns out the three of us are all within about a two meter proximity. Pacman is three seats to my right and Timex is seated directly behind me at another table. I’ve been trying to find out what the start bank for the event is all week and gotten a number of different answers with varying confidence, but am pleasantly surprised to find out we’re starting with 20,000 and 90 minute levels. Outside Pacman there’s one younger guy on the table and the rest are all middle aged or older Europeans. We start at 25/50 and 9 handed tables.

FTOPS is still running strong, but we’re entering the homestretch as 18 of the 24 events have been completed. We’ve saved the best for last though, with the $2,500 Two-Day Event and the $2 million guaranteed Main Event still to come this weekend. If you like poker (and I should hope you do, being that you’re reading a poker blog right now), then get your butts to your computer this weekend and get in on some of the best tourney action online.
OK, now that my mandatory corporate duty is fulfilled for the day, let’s get on to the good stuff. On Monday I gave you an update for FTOPS events 1-9; today I’ll be covering 10-18. Without further ado, let’s get this show on the road:

If you’re anything like my colleagues and I here at Poker From The Rail, being sent out on assignment to cover something you’ve got a passion for is one hell of a prospect. This is particularly true if “being sent on assignment” includes incidentals like airfare, accommodation, and a handful of cash. If this appeals to you in the slightest, then get ready for the latest Battle of the Bloggers writing contest.

Welcome back to another round of the Full Tilt Poker Heads-Up Challenge, where we pit 64 of our top pros against one another to see who will emerge victorious and be crowned king of the Tilters. Today’s match promises to be a good one, as 4 seed Gavin “I play better when I’m drunk” Smith takes on 13 seed Marco “Thank god I don’t have to cut hair for a living anymore” Traniello. Kick the tires and light the fires, let’s get this puppy airborne:

Paris, France: Our group catches the subway over to the Aviation club with the intention of playing some single table satellites for the Main Event. When we get there around 5PM we’re informed that all the satellites are done for the day and all the tables will be needed later for an exclusive super satellite that we can’t buy into. We go to ask about cash games but the man running the single table satellites comes to finds us and lets us know he’ll run one more for us.
Timex and I are the only ones who decide to play a 1,650 Euro satellite with 10 players where 1st pays a seat and 2nd around 3,500 Euro. We start with 5,000 chips at 25/50 with 10-minute blinds. It is an excessively fast structure.

Paris, France: Timex and Will come to my room sometime around 1PM. It turns out tonight was the one night they weren’t able to book at our hotel, so they need to drop off their luggage. Speaking of our hotel, I somehow lucked into an amazing room. The hotel is only a few minutes train ride from the club and my 135 Euro a night room is incredibly large compared to my expectations. It has a living room with a desk and two small couches, a separate bedroom with a king-sized bed, and a bathroom with proper bathtub and plenty of room to move around in. After having paid substantially more for much worse in Venice, this has turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
Later in the evening we make our way over to the Aviation club for another 200 rebuy satellite into the ME. I realize I’ve forgotten my membership card, but the guy at the front desk surprisingly doesn’t make an issue out of it and lets me in just by giving my name. We line up in the cramped cashier area and eventually get registered. We’re some of the last registrants and, as a result, they stick us all on the same table. Awesome.

A little while back, we presented Chris Ferguson’s thoughts about the UIGEA and how things are shaking out for online poker. He shared his insight on what was and is happening and gave us a lot of information on the subject. But that’s not all we talked about.
Being the character that he is, Chris was also good enough to field a few other questions and give us his thoughts on several aspects of playing poker and improving your game. From physical conditioning to avoiding tilt, here are his opinions in his own words:

Paris France, May 12th: Timex, Will and I walk into the Aviation club on the Champs de Elysees after getting dinner on the street. I’ve brought my passport because you now have to register and pay a 100 Euro fee in order to gain membership. Timex and Will hand over their membership cards then walk off in the direction of the cage to claim Timex’s wire transfer which had arrived mistakenly under the name Mac Donald. I pull out my credit card and hand it to the man behind the desk to pay for the fee.
“Ah, I’m sorry sir, cash or check only.”

Ah FTOPS – it’s like Christmas for degenerates. And Christmas comes four times a year. And instead of getting some crappy sweater-vest and a book on how to be a better man from your girlfriend, you get the chance to win hundreds of thousands of dollars playing in a donkament. The only thing that’s missing is the eggnog.
So in lieu of Big Donkey giving you The Week at FTP, I’ll be giving you the rundown on the first nine amazing FTOPS VIII events. We’ve had some good laughs so far, shed some salty tears, and ingested many cans of Coke Zero in an attempt to bring you all things FTOPS. Here are the highlights thus far:
