Big Donkey Big Donkey

Alright – I’m going to come right out and put a big frickin’ jinx on Mr. Lindgren by saying that he has this whole WSOP Player of the Year thing wrapped up already.

There, it’s done. Sorry Erick, you’re a nice guy and all, but I gotta go with my gut here. I mean, let’s look at EDog’s performance so far this year:

  • Three final tables
  • One bracelet (a career first, btw)
  • Nearly $1.3 million in winnings in one month’s worth of tournament play

Sure, there are some other big names who have also had some deep runs during this year’s Series, but for my money, EDog has proven himself to be the leader of the pack.

The difference between a $1,500 NLH event and a $2,000 PLH event at the WSOP is massive. The $1,500 event got 2,720 entries yesterday. Today’s tournament, with only a $500 higher buy-in and a slightly different variant of poker, only got 605 players.

My starting table is not exactly my first pick in line ups. It has David Pham, Rizen and Zeejustin, as well as a familiar looking Asian guy in the 10 seat. The best way to describe him is that he’s an Asian guy who’s trying to look like an Italian guy; open collared shirt, gold necklace, slicked back pompadour style hair and a look in his eye that says he might blurt “Eh! Whasa matta you?” at the drop of a hat.

Yet another $1,500 No-Limit tournament… how thrilling. Even though I made an effort to get to bed early, I couldn’t fall asleep until 4AM. Most nights, a little under seven hours of sleep has carried me through beautifully, but today my head is aching and I’m feeling the stomach sickness I normally get when I don’t have enough sleep. Noon is too early for a poker tournament.

OK, add this to the list of 187 other reasons why poker is jumping the shark: All In – The Poker Musical.

I shit you not.

They’re making a freakin’ poker musical. Why, oh why must this be? Who in Hell(muth) thought this was a good idea? Uh, yeah, that’s right. Phil Hellmuth is credited as one of the “masterminds” behind what I can only guess will be a bigger disaster than the sinking of the Titanic, the burning of the Hindenberg, and the pregnancy of Jessica Alba combined.

I maintain my position that off days are for pussies, cowards and people who care about mental health but, unfortunately, the combination of there being no hold ‘em event at the WSOP and my own incompetence in mixed games has forced me to actually take one. I guess it’s probably a good idea anyway since I never get to see Celina and I am several days behind in my writing. I spend 13 hours at the Rio, get home around 1:30AM and need to be asleep by 2:45AM in order to get eight hours sleep, so I don’t really have time to fit in the writing.

Welcome back to another round of the Full Tilt Poker Heads-Up Challenge, where we take 64 of our top pros and pit them against one another in a Mortal Kombat style showdown. OK, so nobody gets killed, but you get the idea. This week’s match is the second of our six seed versus 11 seed showdowns, as John “May or may not be from Miami” Cernuto takes on Niki “I shouldn’t have switched screen names” Jedlicka. This should be a good match folks, as we have an established vet taking on one of poker’s young guns. One quick note before we get started, today’s match will be a slightly abridged version of what we normally do, as I’m feeling lazy today and could only be bothered with seven categories, not the usual nine. Without further ado:

You’d think with the stress and anticipation of making a final table, I might have trouble sleeping. Instead, the exhaustion of playing so long for so many days straight puts me out like a light and I sleep like a baby. In the morning, Tom gives me a ride to the Rio and the traffic on the I-15 is quite bad, making me nervous about being late for the 2PM start. When we pull up to the back entrance of the Rio, I sprint out of the car toward the poker room even though Tom assured me they’ll start a final table late.

Welcome back to another round of the constant catastrophe we like to call Reader Mail. Once again, our mailbag has been stuffed to the gills, so let’s give it some breathing room and air a few of these questions out. Email us at pokerfromtherail@fulltiltpoker.com with any comments, questions or certifiably insane rants about that time you thought a bee had stung you but it turns out you were just jabbing yourself in the arm with a pen. Wow, that might’ve been the stupidest thing I’ve ever written (and that’s saying a lot). Anyway, on to the show:

The Captain The Captain

One of the most entertaining aspects of live poker is the banter at the table. Just mentioning certain players immediately elicits comments about their style and, invariably, their personality at the table. But how much of what we see accurately reflects the player in question? For that matter, how important is “table image” when you get right down to it?

Rather than trying to put a fine point on it ourselves, we recently had the chance to listen to Gavin Smith’s thoughts on the subject. While his antics might lead folks to believe that he’s a reckless madman at the table, that’s far from the case. In fact, people’s perception of him is just another edge that he’s able to capitalize on. Here’s what he had to say about image and how it fits into the picture for him:

2PM restarts are heaven. My best guess for an average night’s sleep over the course of the WSOP is about seven hours, and being given an extra two the day before you try to make a deep run in a tournament is crucial. SuperflousMan, Gobboboy and Jcarver have also made day two, and they swing by a little before the event to give me a ride. I get to my seat 45 seconds before restart and scan the table; not many familiar faces.

On one of the first hands, it folds to a player in MP1 with 8 BBs. With the BB out of his chair, MP1 shoves and it folds to me in the SB. I call with As-9s and win a flip over his 4-4, moving my stack up to around 80,000.
