It’s been a busy week here at Full Tilt Poker, with our pros (now hovering somewhere around the 2,000 mark) winning about one out of every four World Series events. I’ve been handed the monumental task of taking over for Big Donkey this week, as he’s busy taking care of press releases for each of WSOP winners from the weekend, so let’s hope I don’t screw this one up too badly. Without further ado, let’s get this party started:

Somewhere around 11:30 in the morning Watts and I realize that nobody with a car is going to play the $5,000 No-Limit event today. We don’t have enough time to call a cab and get there anywhere close on time, so we’re forced to be dicks to Tom (LearnedfromTV) and wake him several hours before he needs to be up. Tom agrees to help us out and sleep walks his way to the car.

A long time ago in a galaxy far away, a poker blogger named hdouble wrote an epic two-part post using quotes from The Big Lebowski to shed a new light on the poker world. Many years later, hdouble is now friend/maniacal overlord of The Rail (please don’t give me another 10 lashes for this one), and I thought it would be fitting if I paid homage to our fallen comrade by ripping off his idea (which he, in turn, ripped off from Bill Simmons, who probably ripped it off from someone else). After all, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

With that said, I’ll be attempting to match as many quotes as I can from that great cornerstone of American culture, The Simpsons, to our very own Full Tilt Poker pros. Some of the quotes will be stretches; some of the quotes have been so dead on that I couldn’t use them for fear of reprisal; some of the quotes I’ve picked simply because they’re so damn funny. One other note before I get started: I’ve nicked most of these quotes from various online sources, none of which I trust in terms of accuracy. So if you notice anything wrong, please don’t freak out and send me angry emails about how I’ve desecrated a classic piece of pop culture. Hey, we all make mistakes, right?

It’s been a long time since I’ve played any Sit & Gos. When I first deposited online, I began by playing $10 SNGs and eventually moved up to the $30 ones, all the way back in 2003. I ended up playing around 2,000 SNGs, but haven’t done any real volume of them since. Luckily, the line up at my table looks like mostly recreational players, except for one unfortunate draw on my right, my good friend Matt aka “Mlagoo” on 2+2.

The tournament starts us with 3,000 chips and hour levels, with only the winner cashing and advancing to the next table. My first hand comes up against Matt:

Welcome back to another edition of everyone’s favorite single elimination tournament, the Full Tilt Poker Heads-Up Challenge. We’ve taken the top 64 of our 8,000 plus pros and pitted them against one another in a duel to determine the greatest FTP pro of them all. This week’s match is the last of our 5 versus 12 seed showdowns, with Lee “Chimpanzees are people too” Watkinson taking on Greg “I wish I was still playing hockey” Mueller. This should be a good one people, let’s get this show on the road:

Reader Mail is back and better than ever before! Actually, we’re the same as we’ve always been, I just felt like getting myself pumped up for today’s action. Things you will not find in this mailbag: a mention of Vinnie Vinh and his omnipresent chair; me noticing that Mike Matusow has lost a ton of weight thanks to his “starve yourself into $100K” program; or any discussion of the WSOP “Ladies Event,” a poker tournament for women only. What you will find is the cream of the crop when it comes to semi-poker related questions answered by a guy who knows relatively little about poker. Email us at pokerfromtherail@fulltiltpoker.com with any comments, questions, or diatribes about Boston sports fans and their unending quest to be the most insanely pompous a-holes on the face of the planet. Which is the long way of saying: go Lakers! On to the show:

For a number of reasons, I’ve decided to take the day off. First of all, there are no Hold ‘em events at the WSOP today, at least not any that men can play in. My parents are in town and I told them I’d go to dinner and perhaps a show. Lastly, I’m just plain tired and getting some extra sleep is very welcome.

I wake up in a complete daze. Even though I’ve gotten less than six hours sleep on previous nights leading up to poker, I feel especially drained this morning. That’s not about to stop me from playing though. I crawl out of bed, throw some cold water on my face and stumble into the shower. There are two shower nozzles, one which always lets the water out way too hot, and the other way too cold. The only way to find a balance is turn both on at the same time, which results in both becoming a medium temperature.

When we get to the Rio I buy into today’s $2,500 NLH tournament and find my way to the seat. I’m half asleep and tell myself I need to play pretty tight and in line since my brain doesn’t feel fully capable of going into an elaborate thought process. I chug down one of the God awful All In energy drinks (which they are having trouble giving away) then order a cappuccino from the waiter. The tournament starts us with 5,000 chips and one hour levels.

In all of the excitement that goes with the WSOP, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that a lot of action takes place at the side-games going on elsewhere during the Series. While the side-games don’t see the same media coverage given to the larger tournaments, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t loaded with memorable moments.

While he’s most recently made headlines for taking down the $10K Pot-Limit Hold ‘em event and earning his first bracelet, Nenad Medic’s been playing the side-games around the WSOP for several years now. Looking back, a lot of his experiences stand out, but there was one in particular that he shared with us. In his own words, here’s what Nenad had to say:

I have a choice between playing the WSOP $5,000 shoot out event and the Bellagio $2,000 deep stacked event today. Since I don’t really feel at the top of my game lately (and I don’t remember much about SNG strategy), I’ve decided to go play the easier event at the Bellagio, since all the good players should be over at the series.

The Bellagio event also allows the opportunity to sleep in a little since it starts at 2pm. I get a ride over around 1:30pm and find Grafyx in the poker room. It takes a little time to convert his Rio chips into Bellagio cash so I enter the tournament about 10 minutes late. The tournament starts us with 20,000 in chips at 25/50 blinds with 40 minute levels, which is about as good as you’re going to find for $2,000 in a daily tournament.
