It’s seems to be standard practice to commit yourself to resolutions with the beginning of each new year. It’s usually things which you should be doing anyway, but with the flip to a new calendar some try to make some changes. Poker players are no different and bloggers usually take it a step further. They tend to put their resolutions down in print for everyone to see and call them out if they get out of line.
My resolution is always the same, don’t be a donkey. And I never follow through as I continue to be one of the worst players in the world. This year I’m going to try something different.
From January 1, 2009 to December 31st, 2009 I am going to run the Chris Ferguson Challenge and see how much money I can pull together starting from zero. I’ll update my progress here as the year goes along and I’m calling out fellow FTP blogger Michael Craig to see if he’s willing to do the same. I’m sure we could come up with some kind of side bet to make it interesting.
This week I hit up some of my blogger friends to see what kind of New Year’s Resolutions they had lined up for this year. Check them out after the jump.
From Garthmeister:
1) Play the 2-7 Triple Draw Limit event at this year’s WSOP.
2) Make more of an effort to play the online events that I have a good record at.
3) Keep better track of my performance in various games and limits (which I am sure will be a popular one.)
From Mookie (runs the most popular blogger tourney, has yet to ever win one of his own events):
My only poker resolution is to take 1st in a tourney. I’m tired of 2nd place finishes.
From Gracie (aka Mrs. Sweet Sweet Pablo):
My resolution is to play less goofing around poker and more real poker. Though January 1st is an arbitrary date in my poker life, it’s a good time to reassess my game and plug holes. It’s about time I actually started USING poker tracker to improve my game.
Oh. And learn the definition of ROI!
From Waffles (king of the delusional):
So f#$% it. I am going with my strengths. What are those? I play outside of my bankroll and get f#$%ing lucky a lot. So my new strategy is to play whatever the f#$% I want. Who gives a crap about building a bankroll or playing games that are in the range for the bankroll. F#$% that shit. I am going to play whatever the f#$% I want to which probably will include some nice full bankroll $500 HU SNG play somewhere along the lines. The one change I am going to make is when I donk into a nice big win I am going to cash half of it out.
From Daddy (PG-rated version):
I vow to only play online poker in my underwear this year.
From Drizz:
Dick Clark dropped the ball on Times Square last night for the 115th consecutive year. Today, I personally will begin a new outlook on keeping my hard earned money from playing the Omaha cash games and SnGs played at Full Tilt.
Dropping the ball on orphan pots and not claiming them, dropping the ball on easy folds when I’m beat, dropping a tournament buy-in because my five year old needed his bedtime story twenty minutes ago. These things add up over a year’s time to some serious money left on the table. I have identified the above as my leaks to plug for a profitable 2009. Many call it a resolution, I call it getting my head out of the proverbial hole-in-the-ground and watching every dollar bet/spent on various ring games and tourneys. Perhaps had I watched the wasted bets more carefully, my ledger wouldn’t have bleed red for 2008.
Since my chosen poker poison is Omaha (I prefer PL/NLO8), where your profitability mostly correlate to how well you’re running with coin flips. But, that should only net a break-even player (and looking back I would LOVE to have broken-even in 2008!). To be a winner in 2009, I need to follow my resolution set above and be more vigilant at the tables even when the duties of parenting call with a hunger scream. Watching the players versus waiting for that wrap straight flush draw to shove all the money in on will get you blinded off and on tilt when those 21 outs twice don’t come in.
Aggression, fiscal restraint, and a hint of awareness; my 2009 recipe for a return to profitability at the tables.

January 4th, 2009 at 3:03 pmBankroll management is the key to being a successful poker player. One of the biggest reasons players lose is they are playing outside of their bankroll.

January 7th, 2009 at 8:41 amI resolve three things then, since this seems to be all “trendy” and crap.
1) I will not type “Bad Beat” or “Doom-Switch” once this entire year, in relation to a hand I lose.
2) I wil bust Waffles out of a few more of the Blogger MTT’s, than the lowly twice I managed it this year. To some 50% success would be a descent number but to me, that’s so “break even.”
3) I will continue reading this space on the Intertubes. It makes me happy and, it is supposed to be “happy” new year right!
