2009 World Series of Poker – Day 12 From the Rail

There is always great debate amongst the players, media and fans about the existence of the Ladies World Championship at the World Series of Poker. There seem to be valid arguments for and against the event but I will leave those to the experts. They played the event so I was inside the rail to watch the action. It was definitely one of the more interesting days in the Amazon Room.

The action started off fast and furious but settled down by the end of the night when the pros successfully dodged the land mines throughout the day. Full Tilt pro Svetlana Gromenkova ended the night with the second biggest chip stack and Erica Schoenberg will also have some chips to start Day 2. Other players returning for Day 2 are Mario Ho, JJ Lui and Women’s Poker Hall of Famer Susie Isaacs.

Day 12 also saw the start of the $10k Omaha/8 World Championship which drew 179 players and only losing 50 over the ten hours of play. The Brasilia Room was once again subjected to a huge influx of railbirds as the top players took their seats in the back corner. I will not pretend to be objective railing this tournament, I would love to see Mike Matusow make a deep run and win another bracelet in this event. His friends tell me that he his really dialed in so far this year, just needing to avoid some of the bad luck.

The big crowd and cheers of the night were for the final table of the $2,500 6-max Limit Hold’em Championship. Poker legend Daniel Negreanu made a deep run and was chip leader through most of the day. That was until he was heads up with online and live pro Brock Parker. Parker took down his first WSOP bracelet in what the spectators considered an upset. The other pros knew it differently as Parker is a low key player who loves the Limit game.

In blogger news, we came close to having a WSOP awarded to a blogger when Shawn “sprstoner” Glines made the final table of the $2,500 No Limit Hold’em event. Sitting on the rail for most of the final table I was hoping to see him take it down. Unfortunately he ran his AK into KK when down to 3 handed play. He collected a nice chunk of change but will have to wait for a later event for the first WSOP bracelet.

In personal news, I was not able to win my Main Event seat via the Battle of the Bloggers Tournament of Champions when I ran my QQ smack into a uber aggro donkey’s KK. He finally caught a real hand. Congrats to jjok and actyper for winning the Main Event seats. ck31 and karmarules came in 3rd and 4th to collect $2,000 Bracelet Race packages. I’ll be railing CK as she uses her prize to play the $2,500 Pot Limit Omaha/8 tournament.
