It’s Saturday morning at the World Series of Poker which can only mean one thing. Another $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event to pack the hallways with glory seekers and bankroll busters. Nearly 3,000 more players will donate their buyin to try and catch lightning in a bottle. Opposite of the $10,000 World Championship events, this time we’ll see the amateurs vastly out number the pros. Bracelet Race qualifiers, local poker club winners, and some putting their entire roll on the line. They’re all stacked up waiting for the flood doors of the Amazon Room to open.
The big story of the day involves a much different event. Legendary Doyle Brunson begins Day 25 in great position to win his 11th WSOP bracelet and tie Phil Hellmuth for the most in history. There are 12 players remaining in the $10,000 Seven Card Stud/8 World Championship and Texas Dolly is sitting in 3rd. There are some tough players between him and history including Jeff Lisandro, Perry Friedman, Lyle Berman and Scotty Nguyen. With the massive railbirds in town for the $1,500 making the corridors crowded, I’ll be thankful for my media credentials to get inside the rail and witness history up close.
There are two restarting events today, both $2,000 tournaments. No Limit Hold’em Event #36 will award a shiny new bracelet this evening and the Limit Hold’em Event #38 begins Day 2 with Full Tilt pro Rafe Furst the first name that jumps out as I peruse the list.
The second new event of the day brings another World Championship. Today’s $10,000 event is Pot Limit Omaha in the Brasilia Room and my pre-game pick is guru Scott Clements who has two Omaha final tables already this year.
Every inch of the Amazon Room will be packed today from the halls to the bathrooms to the poker kitchen to the rails. I will do my best to keep up with the action. Sharp elbows and sharp minds, 55 stay alive.
