The rail was empty to start Main Event Day 2b
After sitting in the same spot in the same room for over 40 days, you would think it would be pretty difficult to see something new at the 2009 World Series of Poker. Today will have the single largest collection of tournament players in the Rio for the WSOP. More than either day of the $1,000 “Stimulus Special”, more than any donkament, more than the controversialy sold out Main Event Day 1d.
The 2,924 players showing up today for Day 2b of the Main Event will surpass everything. The staff of the Rio have taken the unique steps of adding poker tables to just about every square inch they can find. Rows of tables have been loaded into the corridors used by fans and railbirds, additional table have been set up near the secondary feature table, the “Buzio” tables are lined up in the halls of the main casino, and every single cash game has been broken in the regular Rio poker room. They are not even allowing spectators into the Amazon Room at the start of the day.
We’ll certainly something completely different today at the World Series of Poker.
I will do my best for you, honorable reader, to keep up with the insanity today. It seems the poker gods decided to make things a little easier at the start of the day. From my perch above the Amazon Room I can see a number of big name Full Tilt players including Howard Lederer, Erick Lindgren (who just busted before I could hit the publish button), “Miami” John Cernuto, Kristy Gazes, Ross Boatman and Steve Brecher. All from the comfort of my seat.
“All in and a call!” will be shouted until the wee hours.
Yesterday we saw Day 2a cut a huge chunk out of the remaining field. Nearly 75% of the players survived Day 1 but just 30% (607) will get to join the combined Day 3 field. Greg “FBT” Mueller continues his 2009 WSOP hot streak sitting near the top of the heap at the end of the day. Also surviving were Andy Black, Fabrice Soulier, Vitaly Lunkin, Isaac Baron, Barney Boatman, Erik Seidel, and Roland de Wolfe. Other notable names making the survivor list were actor Jason Alexander, poker legends Mike Sexton, Thor Hansen and Carlos Mortensen.
