Poker From The Rail

The start of the day is always nice and quiet in the Amazon Room. It’s completely empty except for a handful of cash game tables with action, dealers getting ready for their day, and surly security guards snarling at any perceived slight. The red Corvette is back in the room after adding up mileage between here and the conference lobby. The ESPN techs are ever tweaking the system getting ready for the final table of the Champions Invitational. Another full day planned out ahead of us.
After a week of watching flop games we finally get a chance to witness a little stud action. 5pm today brings the $10,000 World Championship in Seven Card Stud which will bring another star-studded lineup of classic poker players and field of rocks. 158 players competed in this event with Eric Brooks taking the prized jewelery and the Stud specialist will be looking to put their stamp on this year’s World Series of Poker.
Another event will also be starting today at noon with the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha tournament. The European players have been dominating PLO for awhile and 2008 winner Vanessa Selbst will look to duplicate Tang Luu’s feat last night by repeating in an Omaha tournament. Last year there were 759 entrants so I’m going to set the line higher than that for this year, continuing the run of huge fields in the series this year.
We’ll also see Day 2 of the $1,000 “Stimulus Special” where they dropped an nearly 90% of the field in the first “Day”. Of the original 6,012 players who started with dreams of glory, only 760 will get to see another day. 620 will make the money so we’ll see the bubble early. The field will be split between the Brasilia and Miranda rooms where they will play down the final table, at the previous rate it may only take until the dinner break.
Over the last few days I’ve taken some time to meet and talk to several of the players in the $1k who qualified online and it’s been a great experience. Later today I will bring you some of their stories which vary from one man to another. We had everything from a young online player just starting his career to seasoned pros to a veteran actor who most will recognize. All this while trying to dodge the craziness and pick up a win in this inaugral event.
