Seven tournaments in one day is a bit aggressive and nearly impossible to follow without electronic/web/word of mouth assistance but somehow everyone got through the day relatively unscathed. The picture above was taken from the best vantage point of the day. The WSOP honchos put all three final tables and the No Limit 2-7 Draw game all in the same area which could be seen from the elevated platform at the feature table. The picture shows the railbirds looking down on the Stud World Championship final table (Max Pescatori sporting the Italian colors).
The players at the final table of the $1k “Stimulus Special” were given the bonus of having their event broadcast on ESPN360.com on top of the promise of $771,000 at the end of it all. There were some obvious nerves amongst the players who found themselves under the lights in the their very first WSOP. Former WSOP bracelet winner Dan Heimiller was feeling pretty comfortable at the final table with experience and chips on his side.
The No Limit 2-7 Draw game was where most of the railbirds hovered until the end of the night. Names like Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow and John Juanda were just a few of the huge names sitting in the tiny remaining field. They would be entertained by classic Hellmuth and Matusow moments with the kind of banter generally reserved for when the cameras are focused on the table. So far in the 2009 WSOP, this was by far my favorite tournament to watch. Unfortunately my “cooler” status continues as I watched a quick succession of Full Tilt pros moving from the table to the rail.
Outside of the rail and outside the Amazon Room I had my first “kilt man” siting and I suspect we’ll be seeing quite a few over upcoming weeks. The interesting characters I’ve always heard about are starting to trickle up the fringes waiting for their chance to do something ridiculous and find their 15 seconds of fame. We’ve already witnessed some over the top decisions in eye wear and one was playing in a huge chef’s hat. Most of assumed he was just one of the many to loss a silly prop bet with a friend.
It was another interesting day wandering the rail and I’m beginning to develop very sharp elbows to ease my passage from one area to another.
Adaption is the key to survival.
