My daily recaps of the action have involved watching people watching poker.  The potential for history on Day 9 was sitting at the final table of the No Limit 2-7 Draw tournament in the form of Phil Ivey.  Always a crowd favorite, the rail around and above the main stage would be stacked deep as long as Ivey still had chips in front of him.

Ivey did not come to the final 7 in a dominant chip position but it would have been tough to find anyone betting against him.  He wasn’t shooting for the $96,000 first place prize money, he was looking to add that jewelry to his collection.  Ivey has made prep bets on the most trivial things for less and in fact there is a rumor going around of a big bracelet bet going with several other pros.  If that is true than Ivey was first to strike.

Several players were eliminated from the final table in pretty quick succession and it looked like this crazy variation of poker was going to plow through the players.  Three handed seemed like a marathon until Yan Chen was sent to the rail.  He was considered the best 2-7 player at the table and that opened things up for number 6.  Then the battle really picked up.  No one, including Ivey, expected the heads-up match to go over 3 hours.  There were huge swings in chips between Ivey and John Monnette.

Away from the final table it was easy to distinguish who won the latest big pot, Ivey had the majority of the railbirds in his pocket.  The big hands were few and far between but it was finally settled when Ivey caught a big hand sitting on the chip lead.  The cards were out, the deal was done.  For the first time all day Phil Ivey cracked a smile and enjoyed the moment.

Always one to keep to himself but never lacking in self-confidence, Ivey spoke with a WSOP staffer later about his win.  “It means I am one step closer to number seven.”

He took the time for the standard WSOP winner photographs and then he hustled out of the room without a single interview.  This is Phil Ivey and he had some more business at hand.  A hundred yards away in the Brasilia Room he had a stack in the $10k Mix Championship that was being blinded off the entire time.

Just like nothing happened he took his seat in the middle of the room and started working on bracelet number 7.
