2009 wsop 41 2009 World Series of Poker Throwing a Near Perfect GameIn his former life, Sean “gildabeansjp” Gildea was a successful college baseball player and minor league pitching prospect for the Rivercity Rascals. When that didn’t pan out, he took up our little game of poker to satisfy his competitive edge. At the end of his very first World Series of Poker tournament he would be batting a clean 1.000 for his poker career.

Born and raised outside Boston, Gildea won a Bracelet Race on Full Tilt Poker and ran his satellite into a big chunk of change. The 24 year old software sales rep took a shot online with a big MTT for just $26. He won the event, knocking out Full Tilt pro Grabielle Hill along the way, which he used to buy into the $2,500 No Limit Hold’em Event #13. This was his first shot at the big time after running well online making a $35,000 Guarantee final table and an 11th in the $750,000. He spends most of his time online paying No Limit Hold’em cash games and MTT’s. But every poker player dreams to play in and win themselves a World Series of Poker event. This satellite gave him that shot.

It seems he never could find himself at a soft table from the very beginning. Catching very few premium hands he was still able to chip up throughout Day 1 with steals and picking off a few bluffs. His jump up the leaderboard came at the expense of Full Tilt pro Eric Siedel when he knocked him out with a big hand. He finished the day 39th in chips and in great position to make a run at winning the first WSOP he entered.

Day 2 was more of the same grinding with no big hands but still kept himself above par well into the tournament. Then he ran into a monster that chopped his tournament legs out from under him. Eventually he put all his chips in but couldn’t pull out the win. He felt like he had a real shot at a final table and win but soothe his disappointment with a 32nd place finish for just under $12,000. He played a great tournament and represented Full Tilt well. He has no plans to play anymore events this year but will certainly take this experience to build his bankroll and come back next year with a vengeance.

His fiance Beth was by his side the entire time providing him with support and encouragement along the way. The life of a poker widow is never easy, especially when you have to deal with the Phil Ivey fan club hip checking you along the rail. Sean appreciated her support and hopes to plan a huge honeymoon next year with his 2010 World Series of Poker winnings.

Well played Sean, and good luck next year.
