MicheleLewis2010 1 2010 World Series of Poker: Michele Lewis vs Madsen/HellmuthOne of the joys of tournament poker is walking up to your table and getting the first look at who you’ll be battling. It’s even more interesting when your choice is a Shootout event and they will be all you see until you win or hit the rail.

One of our resident guest bloggers Michele Lewis entered the Limit Hold’em Shootout tournament this week and found herself staring at none other than Phil Hellmuth and Jeff Madsen. A pretty tough lineup considering the other tables around the room with 8 soft spots and a dealer. Once I found out she was 4-handed with Madsen and Hellmuth, I jogged it down to the Amazon Room to rail our friend.

I won’t ruin the surprise, you can find her writeup below.

The Shootout
by Michele Lewis

Although late, I was able to register in WSOP Event #53 Limit Hold’em Shootout on Wendesday. It was an easy table unless you consider Phil Hellmuth and Jeff Madsen good players. Hellmuth arrived late and immediately began flopping sets to overcompensate his blind-off. I opted not to say “And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you become a real hold’em champion” because timing is critical for a professional smartass like me. Besides, I wasn’t in my usual sassy mood. For one, I was busy building my stereotype tight-ass woman player by mucking 93, 72, T2 and secondly, he was chatting with the big guy on my right making it feel as though I was stuck in the middle seat on an airplane.

Then it happened, just as it always does… someone sucked out on Phil Hellmuth. That’s when T9 became known as…the amateur hand. He went on and on and on…said some naughty words then, like clockwork, sent a few players on tilt. I like to do the same thing, just more tactfully or passive aggressively. I ridicule my previous table and say something like…”It was a horrible table! Those women were raising under the gun with KJ! They see face cards and go crazy.” This tightens play quite nicely so I can raise under the gun with KJ.

I think we played four-handed for four days. Nonetheless, it was an entertaining four days, as Hellmuth began checking or betting in the dark, talked Madsen into betting in the dark pre-flop, and there was an incident with a flashlight, an elephant and a cat but that story can only be revealed in the dark using special lighting and a Batman decoder ring. Hellmuth offered his infamous constructive criticism to everyone but me because he obviously recognized I was the best player at the table. Or maybe he was afraid since I gave him shit for winning a big pot with the amateur hand. Good times and good timing for me as I picked up some pots using the chick-always-has-an-ace-image.

Unfortunately, payback is a bitch… I flopped an Ace against Madsen. I bet, Madsen raised, and I called blah blah blah. And there I was…most of my chips in the pot, totally priced-in, top pair, albeit lousy kicker, and only 1200 left with 200-400 blinds. I was supposed to call him with the million to one odds but it was just one of those moments… there were too many hands to beat mine, Madsen knew I had an Ace, he wasn’t mentioning my smile and Hellmuth was too quiet. I was beat. I looked at my 1200 and said “He has two pair, I can end my tournament now or I can triple this 1200 in another hand.” Despite tripling up the next hand with 33 and Madsen later confirming he had two pair, my goal of a WSOP final table and final hand of AJ was shot down by the suck out’s 89.

It was a lot of fun. Despite often seen footage, Phil’s actually a nice guy. But don’t tell anyone.
