Annette Obrestad was just one part of Big Money Sunday
As I followed along with the 4 major tournaments occurring on Full Tilt yesterday, it was tough to figure out who’s picture to use at the top of the post. Annette Obrestad holds the record for the youngest player to hold a WSoP bracelet by winning the 2007 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event. Thanks to reasonable age restrictions outside the U.S. of A., Obrestad was able to enter the London event at a chippy age just short of 19 years old. She finished last nights Sunday Mulligan in second place.
Kristy Gazes made it further through the weekly $100,000 Double Deuce Fish Tank game than any other red letter pro, that certainly could have her picture at the top of the post and she would obviously be a welcome draw.
I could have picked Steven “UFman2″ Burkholder or any of the other big online names at the $1,000,000 Guarantee final table that included smfit29 (second straight big game final table), previous Sunday Brawl winner bellbop and Frank “Gator93″ Hernandez.
My decision was completely subjective and went with Annette.

The Sunday night was just a bit bigger than the standard with the bump up of the Sunday night game from $750,000 to $1,000,000 and there would be no overlay in this one. Big money and big stacks brought out some great play with only a few exceptions. The 4 big guarantee tournaments brought out just shy of 14,000 players and $1,900,000 in prize money.
- The Sunday Brawl kicked off the day and was apparently kryptonite to all the big name pros as the closest one to the money was Huck Seed. 200 spots short of the cash. The final 3 tables produced some interesting play and one of the craziest examples of a player slowrolling I’ve seen in some time. Next up for the players, online Hollywooding and Big Leaguing.
- You may have noticed the $100k Double Deuce was just a little bigger than the weeks before. That pesky 7,000 max restriction was removed and bumped up to 10,000 players. That allowed over 8,600 players their shot at a big payday for a small buyin. The play is still outrageous at most points and I suggest watching this tournament (if you aren’t still playing) when it gets down to 4 or 5 tables. Pure comedy gold.
- The Sunday Mulligan is where we saw the young annette_15 leave all but 1 of the 1,204 players in her wake to finish second for $33,000 and change. Obrestad’s online resume is pretty ridiculous for anyone, let alone someone her age. She has cashed over $600,000 in Full Tilt tourneys alone and she spreads her action all over with career tournament earnings over $2,000,000. That doesn’t account for the £1,000,000 she won for taking down the 2007 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event.
- The $750,000 Guarantee had it’s monthly switch to $1,000,000 Guarantee and the action did not disappoint. We had another United Nations final table with players from Denmark, Russia, US, UK and Ireland. There were some big money online pros mixed in with a couple unknown players making a very interesting final table.
smfit29 was making his second straight big game final table after his 7th place in last week’s $750,000.
Frank “Gator93″ Hernandez has plenty of big scores under his belt including a second place finish in an August $1k Monday tournament for $60,000.
bellbop’s latest big score was just back in November when he won The Sunday Brawl for $81,000.
Steven “UFman2″ Burkholder has perhaps the biggest resume at the final table which includes a big game win back in September for a cool $135,000.
It seemed appropriate that bellbop, Hernandez and Burkholder were the three final players looking for the $200,000 payday. The battle was great as bellbop was the first to be eliminated and Burkholder eventually put enough pressure Hernandez to take the title 11 hours after the tournaments started.
Interesting enough, I was recently approached through the blog by someone working at ABC News about a story they recently ran on their Campus news site. It was titled “Student Poker Prodigy Earns Six Figures”. The story was about Steven Burkholder and his poker success while attending the University of Florida. I don’t think tuition is going to be a problem. The story needs to update his tournaments by last night’s $200,000 win.
