Poker From The Rail

Sunday was one of the biggest tournament days on the site with the combination of MiniFTOPS XV and Big Money Sunday. About the only thing that could have made it bigger is if it fell on the switch from $750,000 Guarantee to $1,000,000. Over 50,000 players participated in the three MiniFTOPS events alone and it would have been more if the Heads Up event was not capped at 4,096 players. 10 events are in the bag for the series which continues to grow in popularity. Unlike the FTOPS series, there has not been even a sniff of an overlay in the first events and already $2,600,000 has been awarded in prizepool money with some of the bigger events are yet to come.
I took a shot at Event #5 which was a 6-max LIMIT Hold’em super stack tournament, figuring it was the best shot for good value and more towards my skill sets. It turned out to have a huge field with players who did not seem to have a firm grasp on the limit game. I was cruising along well until frustration got the better part of me and button mashed my way to a pitiful exit. I’ve never claimed to play that well.
We haven’t seen too many huge names make it deep in these events to date but that is sure to change. Big Money Sunday did see some impressive results by Full Tilt and other online pros. Popular player Chris “Moormanl” Moorman had several major cashes during the day including a big win in the Sunday Brawl to kick things off. Late in the day (or early in the morning depending upon your geographic location) we saw David “The Dragon” Pham* make his way to the $750,000 final table and finish in 7th place for $18,000 plus change. The final big tournament of the night ended with a huge heads up battle between two well known online players Casey “bigdogpckt5s” Jarzabek and Steven “LeoEleven” Rosen. Jarzabek went on to pick up the win and a great way to end the day.
There are still 17 events remaining in MiniFTOPS XV with plenty of chances for a huge payday for a small layout. Satellites are running constantly and you can find the entire schedule on the MiniFTOPS information page. I will be taking a few more shots throughout the week and hope to change my luck.
Reminder: We are running the “For Anna” Charity poker tournament this evening and it is open to all. Myself and fellow Poker from the Rail blogger Dave McCarthy are putting bounties on our head to encourage participation and loosen things up. If you knock out Mr. McCarthy he will ship you $5 as a reward and you are practically freerolling. Knock me out and I will ship you any book or DVD available in the Full Tilt Poker Store. I’ve also managed to reel in Michael Craig to join the field and working on several other names. In addition to this I will be donating any money won directly back into the charity.
Cheers and good luck at the tables.
