news clip art Saturday News for August 28thIt was another crazy week around the halls of Full Tilt this week as things kept coming at us one after another. Emails were coming in on a regular basis with news and updates faster than we could keep up. The two biggest stories this week were obviously the latest “durrrr Challenge” as well as the Open Letter to the Commerce Casino but there were other bits that didn’t make the cut. This weekend brings the latest edition of Sit n Go Madness, the Big Little Tournament ($2 buyin, $100,000 prizepool), and non-stop satellites running for MiniFTOPS XVII.

Here are 5 of the top stories that grabbed my attention, details after the jump.

1. “durrrr Challenge 2″ is underway between Tom Dwan and Daniel “jungleman12″ Cates. We have all the details and a short interview with Dwan.

2. Howard Lederer and other top players release an open letter to the Commerce Casino voicing their displeasure over the casino’s stance on HR 2267.

3. Episode 3 of the Doubles Poker Championship airs this weekend on GSN.

4. Full Tilt’s Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi appears on ESPN’s Poker Edge podcast.

5. The Full Tilt Merit Cyprus Classic comes to an end, Gloria Balding and Fillipo Candio take a flying leap.

1. The biggest story around our hallways was the start of the second durrrr Challenge where Tom Dwan will take on NLHE HU specialist Dan “jungleman12″ Cates. The rumors were floating around for weeks when I was suddenly alerted from high above that the two players were ready to go for it and get playing.

I was able to spend a few quick minutes on the phone with Dwan to confirm everything including they were ready to go. Even though the durrrr Challenge tables were not set up in the NLHE lobby, the two jumped in a little after midnight and tore through more than 10% of the required hands in the first session. Cates lead is over a half million dollars but we’ve seen how fast things can change.

2. The Commerce Casino did not make many poker players happy last month with their testimony in Congress against HR 2267. The monstrous card barn has an antiquated and oppose the bill for several reasons which fellow FTP blogger Michael Craig get into with great detail here, An Open Letter to the Commerce Casino – Why I Signed.

In response, several top poker players came together to pen an Open Letter to the Commerce Casino which can be found on the website Player Before Profits. Please check it out and join Howard Lederer, Doyle Brunson, Allen Cunningham, Annie Duke, Joe Sebok, Erick Lindgren, and Greg Raymer by signing along with them.

3. Full Tilt’s Doubles Poker Championship will air this Saturday (tonight) at 9pmET on the Game Show Network here in the states. An interesting format of tag-team poker with some of the best players on the planet including Phil Ivey, Tom “durrrr” Dwan, Howard Lederer, Annette Obrestad, Jenn Harman, Phil Hellmuth, Chris Ferguson, Annie Duke, and many others with Lacey Jones acting as host. The $50,000 buyin tournament took place at the Golden Nugget.

4. As we finish up the final month of the summer, thoughts are beginning to concentrate on the coming 2010 November Nine just around the corner. We’ll begin seeing more information come out about the participants with biographies, interviews, and the poker media digging into every aspect of the player’s lives.

“Friend of the blog” ESPN’s Andrew Feldman and Full Tilt’s Phil Gordon sat down with Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi last week to record their Poker Edge podcast. Mizrachi and the boys discuss his strategy for the biggest final table of his career.

5. The Full Tilt Poker Merit Cyprus Classic finished up this week with a great turnout. 181 players traveled to the small Mediterranean island off the coast of Turkey for some poker and fun in the sun. The field was highlighted by several members of the 2010 November Nine with Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, John Racener, Fillipo Candio, and John Dolan. Also making the trek were David Benyamine, Tommy Vedes, Jennifer “jennicide” Leigh, Eric Mizrachi, Eric Cajelais, Chip Jett, Karina Jett, and Roy Winston.

After 6 days of “grinding” in paradise, Andreas Krause was the last man standing collecting $415,780 for his efforts.

For all the impressive videos put out by the PokerNews team during their coverage, one of my favorites has to be the “diving competition” between Gloria Balding and Full Tilt’s Fillipo Candio.

Enjoy.
