I wake up in a complete daze. Even though I’ve gotten less than six hours sleep on previous nights leading up to poker, I feel especially drained this morning. That’s not about to stop me from playing though. I crawl out of bed, throw some cold water on my face and stumble into the shower. There are two shower nozzles, one which always lets the water out way too hot, and the other way too cold. The only way to find a balance is turn both on at the same time, which results in both becoming a medium temperature.

When we get to the Rio I buy into today’s $2,500 NLH tournament and find my way to the seat. I’m half asleep and tell myself I need to play pretty tight and in line since my brain doesn’t feel fully capable of going into an elaborate thought process. I chug down one of the God awful All In energy drinks (which they are having trouble giving away) then order a cappuccino from the waiter. The tournament starts us with 5,000 chips and one hour levels.

For the first hour I’m putting my head in my arms and trying to get some rest between each hand. I’m very card dead and all of my hands and situations are very straight forward at a fairly loose table. I have a very straight forward image since just about every hand I play gets so many callers and I whiff the flop so hard I have to check fold. It’s not until 50/100 I play my first interesting hand:

My stack: ~3,300, BB: ~6,000. Blinds 50/100. I hold 8c-Tc on the CO.

Pre-flop: Folds to me, I raise to 300, folds to the BB, BB calls.

Flop: 6h-Qc-7s

BB leads 400. I’ve seen the BB take this line a couple of times already and both times he had a weak holding. I call intending to bet the majority of turns.

Turn: Ac

BB checks, I bet 800, BB quickly folds.

An orbit later I’m involved again:

My stack: ~4,200, BB: ~5,500. Blinds 50/100. I hold Kh-Jh on the CO.

Pre-flop: Folds to MP3, MP3 raises to 300, folds to me, I call, folds to the BB, BB calls.

Flop: Js-8c-7d

BB checks, MP3 checks, I bet 600, BB calls, MP3 folds.

Turn: 4s

BB checks. The way he’s playing I feel it’s very unlikely he’ll pay off three streets and the better way to get value is to check and bet the river (I think this is a substantial mistake; a considerable portion of his range on a board like this is draws and live players are rarely check shoving, so betting the turn, especially in live poker where people call too much is better than the river.) I check behind.

River: 2s

BB checks, I bet 1,250, BB folds.

For both of the two levels at 100/200 I am entirely card dead and uninvolved. At 150/300 there’s a young, likely internet player on the table who open shoved six BBs in mid position. It folds to me on the CO and I re-shove A-7o. Everyone else folds and he tables T-T. I flop an Ace and move up to around 6,000.

Again I go very card dead and stay uninvolved. The blinds go up to 200/400 and I’m stuck folding hand after hand. I’ve finally woken up, but my cards are so dead I might as well be asleep. After nearly a straight hour of folding I finally look down at a hand:

My stack: 5,200, CO: ~8,000. Blinds 200/400 with 50 ante. I hold A-Qo on the button.

Pre-flop: Folds to UTG+2, UTG+2 raises to 1,100, folds to the CO, CO calls, I move all-in, folds back to UTG+2, UTG+2 folds, CO thinks it over then calls with 9-9

Flop: 9-8-6

Turn: 5

River: 4

Well, that’s the end of my rather pointless day. I managed to last almost to the dinner break, having played in the area of only 10 hands, most of which ended pre-flop. At least I didn’t have to think too hard.
