One Angry Monkey One Angry Monkey

Welcome to the Full Tilt Poker Heads-Up Challenge, where we take 64 of our top poker pros and pit them against one another in a “March Madness” style tournament bracket. Over the coming months, the field will be whittled down one by one until we’ve determined a winner. For those of you who are confused and came to this page thinking this has something to do with poker because it’s called a “Heads-Up Challenge,” we apologize. False advertising, ain’t it a bitch?

A few notes on determining the outcome of each match:

  • The categories of judgment are not set in stone, and can be changed from match to match.
  • Some of the information contained in these matches may be incorrect or just completely made up by us when we see fit.
  • The results of each match will be calculated using a completely unscientific and wholly subjective system of measurement. Or as Eric Cartman might say: “Whatever. I do what I want.”

With that out of the way, let’s get on to our first match. Today’s fight is between number one seeded Phil Ivey and Perry Friedman, the 16 seed. You can check out the entire tournament bracket below. On to the show down:

Category

Phil Ivey

Perry Friedman

Survey Says
Career Earnings

More than $7 million

Nearly $600K

Ummm… Let us think about that one for a moment. Carry the one, divide by 12, take off 30% for taxes. Never mind. Ring one up for Ivey.

Major Titles

5 WSOP bracelets

1 WSOP bracelet

Five is greater than one, right? Just had to double check. Ivey two, Friedman zero.

Tournament Play

Not his specialty, but we hear Phil’s not too shabby when it comes to tourney play.

A great all-around tournament player.

We’d love to give this one to Perry, but let’s get real. It’s Phil Freakin’ Ivey we’re talking about here. Looks like we’re in for a blow-out.

Cash Game Play

Probably the most feared and deadly cash game player in the world.

We tried to join the Tiltboys to get in on the home game action, but apparently it’s some sort of exclusive club. So we wouldn’t know what kind of cash game player Perry is, not that we’d fare too well if we were at the same table as him.

Ivey. And it’s not even close to being close.

Playing Style

Apocalyptically aggressive

What’s the term for a guy who plays every hand? It’s slipping our minds at the moment.

When we grow up, we want to play like Phil. Of course, we’ll never grow up; we’ve got some massive Peter Pan-itis going on around here.

Table Talk
Monosyllabic

Multi-poly-syllabic. To the extreme. And then some. And then some more. And so on. And so on…

Finally! Perry takes one down. Not that we’re advocating non-stop talking at the table, but if there’s one category where Perry has the edge on Phil, this is it.

Nickname

The Phenom

The Baiter

The Baiter? What kind of baiter? Never mind, we’re not touching that one. Or ourselves. Because we don’t do that kind of thing. Anymore. At least not very much. One more round to The Phenom.

Special Skills

Prop bet master

Uses the hole cam to put on a hand puppet show

As sick as Ivey is with his prop betting madness, who doesn’t love a grown man who puts on a hand puppet show for the hole cam? Well, we don’t. Ivey continues to lay the smack down on Friedman.

Outside Poker

Avid golfer

A founding member of the Tiltboys

The Tiltboys once dressed in women’s clothing to play in a ladies tourney at the Bay 101. We have a strict no cross-dressing policy here. Needless to say, we’d rather be hitting the links for an afternoon than putting on a dress. Ivey takes home another category.

So there you have it. Ivey wins by a decisive score of eight to one. We love Perry around here, really we do. But this is usually what happens when the one seed takes on the 16 seed – a true beat down occurs. Phil Ivey advances to the next round.
