It must take real talent to type in a string of profanities with symbols or spaces in lieu of letters to make it through the chat filter. Amazingly enough, some folks have this ability and can make chat-speak references to sodomy, fellatio, and an opponent’s family in a matter of seconds. It’s crude, rude, goes against site rules, but it never ceases to amaze.

Case in point; I recently watched two guys go back and forth in the usual profanely moronic fashion after a massive suck-out. As I was following this and chuckling, Guy #1 tells Guy #2 that he’s probably a “total Republican.” Guy #2 fires back that he is indeed – and proud of it – and tells Guy #1 that he’s a “typical Clinton supporter.” Not only do these two idiots launch into a political argument, but a couple of other players get in on the action. Wake up: you’re playing a $2 Sit & Go! They were just that pathetic.

Both got knocked out shortly thereafter, but continued to slobber on at each other as observers for a couple of minutes. As the freakish entertainment value had worn off by then – kind of like the 13^th page of a Brandi thread – I quit paying attention.

While we’re talking about name calling, that one site is still flogging Shawn Sheikhan. According to the latest headline dubbing him The Poker Perv, his saga continues. Only it’s not really a saga and no other site has paid much attention to him lately. Seriously, what’s the deal here? Is there bad blood between the author and Sheiky? Are they just keeping us informed? I suspect the former, although I wouldn’t hazard a guess as to what that might be over.

I’ve also hypothesized that this whole Poker Perv ploy might be a cleverly crafted Ass Hat SEO campaign designed to drive people searching terms like pervert, molester, rapist, sex crime and deported to their site. Hey man, it’s a weird world – who can tell?

In any case, avoid the urge get into this type of banter. Feeding into some malcontent joker’s e-drivel is a total drag and makes you look like a jackass. Play poker and have a good time of it.

I have to admit, I’m a bit behind on the whole story. I’ve only heard bits and pieces of the entire saga from the penis on back to the Sklansky episode, so I speak with absolutely no authority on the matter. After I finished the latest thread on the 2+2 forums the other day I had to ask myself a very simple question. What is sadder, the sheer number of posts online concerning an attractive young female who happens to be associated with poker in some way, or the fact that I wasted two hours of my day reading about her? I’m still debating the answer with myself, but either way I believe that it speaks ill about the state of the union.

It’s disconcerting on many levels. On the personal level, I fear for myself due to the fact that I became engrossed with this in any way. What does this say about me as a human being? Do I have no life? Am I really a person who even cares about this incessant gossip mongering? I don’t know Brandi Hawbaker, nor do I know this Brandon fellow who’s apparently had his heart ripped from his chest and shredded to pieces (to the extent that he felt the need to share his story with this poker “community” and have it commented upon). So why should I care? I don’t watch soap operas, and that’s what this is when it comes down to it. And yet, as with any grizzly car crash I pass on the road, I simply can’t look away.

On the level of poker and poker players, I fear for the game and its players due to the fact that I hope this isn’t the kind of trash people are concerning themselves with. This has absolutely nothing to do with poker. Yes, it involves people who actually play poker. Beyond that, it’s pure rotten drivel. We should be using these forums to discuss poker, whether it be about certain hands or the overall state of the game. This is nothing but a good heaping of lies and rumors with a small helping of truth sandwiched somewhere in between.

It’s at this point that I begin to think about things on a bigger level, a more societal level. The world of poker is a shared community, a microcosm of a larger functioning mechanism that we call life. The Internet as a whole, other than the purely functional aspects such as pornography and looking up movie times, pretty much consists of one large rumor mill based on the design of the National Enquirer. What good is that? Have we really lost touch with humanity that badly? Go plant a tree or read a book. Go do something useful. Hell, play some damned Internet poker. At least it’s constructive on some level. When we reduce ourselves to such base level actions as talking about some poor, mixed-up girl and whether or not Sklansky got it on with a couple of Billy goats, it just makes me sick.

Then again, who the hell am I to talk? I’m just some hypocrite with the space to air my thoughts. I make myself sick.
