2011WSOP MattJarvis5 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event Day 3

Day 3 at the World Series of Poker is always one of my favorite. It’s the first day when the entire field is together, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel with the breaking of each table. Unlike the rest of the summer, when they break a table here it stays broke. Crews quickly pile the chairs on the hand carts and take apart the table. Never to be used again.

Everyone knows the front runners and the short stacks. The pros are trying to position themselves for bubble time tomorrow by building their stacks to punish the fearful. Scared money players are looking at their stacks while trying to figure if they can make it, crawling and scraping, to a WSOP min-cash.

ESPN is back in full force (coincidentally destroying wifi access for the media) with camera bullying their way between the tables looking for money shot. Players will “Hollywood” as soon as the crews find the table, not realizing sitting for 10 minutes and then folding will not get them on the broadcast.

Plenty of big names remain in the field at the start of play. 2011 WSOP bracelet winner Ben “benba” Lamb is pacing the field with over 550,000 in chips followed by Kevin “BeL0WaB0Ve” Saul and Ryan “g0lfa” D’Angelo also in the Top 5. The top lady standing is Stephanie Albertini with a very healthy 400,100 in chips. Patrik Antonius, Jeff Madsen, and 2010 November Niner Joseph Cheong will be in contention tomorrow unless they run into some horrid luck.

In all we will see just shy of 1,900 player start today with them busting out at a fairly decent pace. They’ll break every table out of the Pavilion Room until we are just left with an Amazon Room containing the next poker world champion.

Check back for regular updates.

Patrik Antonius1 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event Day 3Top chipstack to start Day 3:

1 – Ben “benba” Lamb – 551,600
2 – Kevin “BeL0WaB0Ve” Saul – 542,200
3 – Aleksandr Mozhnyakov – 478,600
4 – Ryan “g0lfa” D’Angelo – 462,300
5 – Tuan Vo – 434,500
6 – Guillaume Darcourt – 410,500
7 – Nicolas Fierro – 405,000
8 – Narenda Banwari – 404,800
9 – Stephanie Albertini – 400,100
10 – Dong Yang Yan – 383,400

Other notables: Patrik Antonius (361,000), Mike “SowerUNCC” Sowers (347,700), Sam Simon (317,900), Shaun “tedsfishfry” Deeb (294,700), Mark “dipthrong” Herm (273,000), Sam Stein (262,200), Justin “BoostedJ” Bonomo (252,400), Jeff Madsen (231,500), Joseph “subiime” Cheong (229,100), David Oppenheim (226,000), Paul “paulgees81″ Volpe (221,5000)

Level 12:

Shaun Deeb is an interesting character. For the longest time he was considered one of the best online tournament players around, then he “retired” for a year, before returning with full force. He once played the Ladies Event in drag complete with pink tank top and makeup. He’s unpredictable at the poker table which can cause players to call him very light when they have no idea what he is playing. Usually this helps him pull in big stacks but sometimes Mother Variance bites back.

Deeb was pulled to the ESPN feature table for taping and a 30-minute delayed live feed. As is normal, he was making moves and building a stack until another player 5-bet shoved on him with A6. Generally there might be a chance his Ace is good but in this instant he was snap called by Deeb with pocket Aces.

But sometimes bad things happen and unless you have your opponent drawing completely dead, there is always a chance. His opponent saw a light in the window with a flopped 6 and then it blew up the Mothership with the rivered 6-ball. That knocked Deeb all the way down to 20,000 and sure fire bad beat hand on the TV.

Level 13:

The most interesting hand of this level happened before my very eyes as I walked the room. I happened upon a table where player in seat 7 was already in the tank for several minutes. I didn’t detect excessive acting, he certainly looked like a man having to make a hard decision. The ESPN cameras appeared and the opponent who had put him all-in sat stone faced.

The 7-seat eventually folded saying “I’ll never fold this hand again but I think you have AA” as his pocket kings were flipped over. Players were shocked and stunned. The winner began sliding his hand into the muck when Freddy Deeb talked him into showing for the camera. He nodded towards the dealer who turned over his pocket Aces for all the world to see at some point during the broadcast.

Some notable stacks around the room:

Chris “boNeZee” Bonita – 465,000
Peter Jetten – 405,000
Sam Simon – 390,000
Joseph Cheong – 335,000
Mark “dipthrong” Herm – 300,000
Thomas Keller – 270,000
Jason Alexander – 245,000
Phil “USCPhildo” Collins – 240,000
Jean-Robert Bellande – 233,000
Miami John Cernuto – 230,000

Level 14:

Today brought one of the oddities of the Main Event when the two hour dinner break came in the middle of Level 13, extending into the evening. Staff locked down the Amazon Room and it was odd moment of quiet. Just 15 tables remained in the Pavilion Room during the break and only four remain at the end of Level 13. Although it’s a long shot, they might actually make the money this evening with some vibrant action.

Huck Seed was one of the big elimination over the last level when his Queens could not dodge a flush draw. Annette Obrestad was eliminated almost immediately after the dinner break but she was short stacked. Shuan Deeb’s mini-stack didn’t last long after his bad beat earlier in the day becoming another big name on the rail. 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Joe Cada has also been shown the door along with Carlos Mortensen, Tom McEvoy, and Lee Watkinson.

New Yorker Patrick Poirier became the first player in the Main Event to eclipse the million chip mark giving him only 333 big blinds. Chris “boNeZee” Bonita continues to contend as the field shrinks picking up a new of big pots along the way. Also sitting near the top of the table are Kevin Saul, Blair Hinkle, Ben Lamb, Shannon Shorr, and Joseph Cheong.

Just one more level before play concludes for the day. Doubtful we’ll knock out enough to hit the money bubble but we’ll get to see the joys of that moment early on Day 4.

JeffMadsenBorgata Big Money Sunday for October 10thFour players walked away from this Big Money Sunday with six digit additions to their bankroll with (annoyingly named) “0—–BM—–0″ taking home $168,306 from the monthly $1,000,000 Guarantee early Monday morning.

It was an interesting day with only the big game finding players working out a deal at the end and every event crushing it’s guarantee. Alex “Kadabra” Keating (not from Family Ties) won over $100,000 for his Sunday Brawl victory with “ArePopke” and “MISSPRODIGY” picking up wins in the $200,000 Guarantee and the Sunday Mulligan. “Oo MADDOX oO” was the player most seen throughout my scanning the tournaments with results in the Sunday Brawl plus both $200,000 and $1,000,000 Guarantees.

In live poker news, the WPT Festa al Lago Main Event is moving into it’s Day 4 with several key Full Tilt players deep in the mix. Jeff Madsen is sitting with second place chips with just 41 players remaining followed by Annette Obrestad and Erik Cajelais. The winner will take home $831,500, a cute trophy, a little face time on TV, and the admiration of every forum fanboy. The non-long haired Steve O’Dwyer leads the pack with other notables including Matt “All In At 420″ Stout, Lyle Berman, Barry Greenstein, Matt Affleck, Allen “Chainsaw” Kessler, and Daniel Alaei. They still have a few more days until the winner is crowned but they are on pace for an exciting final table.

Don’t forget to get working on your FTOPS XVIII satellites which are running around the clock. The next round of big time events kick off on November 10th.

FTOPSXVII FTOPS XVII and Big Money Sunday

FTOPS XVII finished up its run yesterday filling out an already stacked Big Money Sunday roll call of tournaments. The prizepool for Sunday alone was just shy of $7,000,000 if you include the finish of the Two Day Event #29 sending the total FTOPS XVII cash over $20,000,000 for the series. “DQnk” has the unique honor of taking home the biggest single payout without the benefit of winning an event, his deal in the Main Event put $446,942 in his pocket while jersey winner TyboVegas took home $423,057.

The Full Tilt pros were led by Brandon Adams and Chris Ferguson. Adams collected the 6th total FTOPS title for a red letter pro while Ferguson had the single biggest cash among team members with nearly $70,000 for his 5th place finish in Event #13. Jeff Madsen came out like gang busters in the first week but lost steam towards the end with only one small cash while Dave Colcough topped all red letter pros with 5 cashes.

Four players come away from this series added a second FTOPS victory to their resume including Mike “chapmoney” Chapp who was the only player to win two titles during FTOPS XVII. Brent “Broberts85″ Roberts doubled up early then followd by Mark “xqsays” Radoja and Mickey “Mement_mori” Petersen. That also means Yuval “yuvee04″ Bronshtein (4)and Adam “csimmsux” Geyer (3) remain as the only players with more than two FTOPS wins. Chapp comes away with atop the FTOPS XVII Leaderboard with his two victories.

MicheleLewis2010 1 2010 World Series of Poker: Michele Lewis vs Madsen/HellmuthOne of the joys of tournament poker is walking up to your table and getting the first look at who you’ll be battling. It’s even more interesting when your choice is a Shootout event and they will be all you see until you win or hit the rail.

One of our resident guest bloggers Michele Lewis entered the Limit Hold’em Shootout tournament this week and found herself staring at none other than Phil Hellmuth and Jeff Madsen. A pretty tough lineup considering the other tables around the room with 8 soft spots and a dealer. Once I found out she was 4-handed with Madsen and Hellmuth, I jogged it down to the Amazon Room to rail our friend.

I won’t ruin the surprise, you can find her writeup below.

The Shootout
by Michele Lewis

Although late, I was able to register in WSOP Event #53 Limit Hold’em Shootout on Wendesday. It was an easy table unless you consider Phil Hellmuth and Jeff Madsen good players. Hellmuth arrived late and immediately began flopping sets to overcompensate his blind-off. I opted not to say “And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you become a real hold’em champion” because timing is critical for a professional smartass like me. Besides, I wasn’t in my usual sassy mood. For one, I was busy building my stereotype tight-ass woman player by mucking 93, 72, T2 and secondly, he was chatting with the big guy on my right making it feel as though I was stuck in the middle seat on an airplane.

Then it happened, just as it always does… someone sucked out on Phil Hellmuth. That’s when T9 became known as…the amateur hand. He went on and on and on…said some naughty words then, like clockwork, sent a few players on tilt. I like to do the same thing, just more tactfully or passive aggressively. I ridicule my previous table and say something like…”It was a horrible table! Those women were raising under the gun with KJ! They see face cards and go crazy.” This tightens play quite nicely so I can raise under the gun with KJ.

I think we played four-handed for four days. Nonetheless, it was an entertaining four days, as Hellmuth began checking or betting in the dark, talked Madsen into betting in the dark pre-flop, and there was an incident with a flashlight, an elephant and a cat but that story can only be revealed in the dark using special lighting and a Batman decoder ring. Hellmuth offered his infamous constructive criticism to everyone but me because he obviously recognized I was the best player at the table. Or maybe he was afraid since I gave him shit for winning a big pot with the amateur hand. Good times and good timing for me as I picked up some pots using the chick-always-has-an-ace-image.

Unfortunately, payback is a bitch… I flopped an Ace against Madsen. I bet, Madsen raised, and I called blah blah blah. And there I was…most of my chips in the pot, totally priced-in, top pair, albeit lousy kicker, and only 1200 left with 200-400 blinds. I was supposed to call him with the million to one odds but it was just one of those moments… there were too many hands to beat mine, Madsen knew I had an Ace, he wasn’t mentioning my smile and Hellmuth was too quiet. I was beat. I looked at my 1200 and said “He has two pair, I can end my tournament now or I can triple this 1200 in another hand.” Despite tripling up the next hand with 33 and Madsen later confirming he had two pair, my goal of a WSOP final table and final hand of AJ was shot down by the suck out’s 89.

JohnJuanda 2010WSOP 1 2010 World Series of Poker Day 5: Brotherly LoveIt should be a very interesting Day 5 as we will crown two WSOP champions, restart several big field events, and kickoff two more tournaments.  That gives us six tournaments in two huge rooms and plenty of stories to track down.

The $50,000 Player’s Championship final will the be the main attraction starting  at 3PM where we have two Mizrachi brother filling out a loaded (as expected) field.  Team Full Tilt member begins the day sitting 3rd in chips, while David Oppenheimer is the short stack.  Most eyes will be on brothers Robert and Michael Mizrachi who will be trying to make history in the biggest buyin event of the 2010 WSOP. The final table will now switch from the 8-game mix that got us here to NLHE for entertainment purposes as this event will be broadcast on ESPN.

$50,000 Player’s Championship Final Table:

1 – Robert Mizrachi – 3,125,000
2 – David Baker – 3,095,000
3 – John Juanda – 2,620,000
4 – Mikael Thuritz – 2,300,000
5 – Michael Mizrachi – 2,175,000
6 – Vladimirr Schmelev – 19,25,000
7 – Daniel Alaei – 1705,000
8 – David Oppenheim – 460,000

It looks to be a long day for those following the $1,500 Limit Omaha/8 tournament as the field was only reduced to 26 instead of the scheduled final 9. The tournament will now restart at 3pm playing until a winner is declared. Jeff Madsen carries the flag for Full Tilt sitting 10th in chips in a field led by Sasha Rosewood. 2008 November Nine member Ylon Schwartz also remains in the small field along with Huck Seed, Shawn Buchanan, and 2009 WSOP Chip Reese Trophy winner David Bach.

Day 3 of the first $1,000 NLHE will begin with just 41 of the starting 4,345 players with Drew Crawford leading the way. It did not take long for this field to reach the money on the first day of the combined field and things continued to move along. The most notabled player remaining in the field are Eric “basebaldy” Baldwin, they schedule to play down to their final table. It could be a relatively short day if the players continue at their blistering pace.

The two new events are both interesting varieties. At noon we see players come into the room for the $5,000 NLHE Shootout event which is always fun to cover. Since players need to win their table to move on the field shrinks while the number of tables remains the same. Instead of watching the players break tables and combine, we watch as the room continues to empty as we get closer to our set of winners. The second new tournament of the day is the $2,500 Deuce to Seven (Limit) which was won by Abe Mosseri last year in a field of 258.

JeffMadsenBorgata Big Money Sunday February 7th

Jeff Madsen win the 2010 Borgata Winter Open Main Event

Blame it on good old fashioned American Football. Yesterday was the big game here in the States and it looks like it might be the most watched NFL game televised and you could tell a few degenerates took time off from the virtual tables to take in the game. The numbers were down across the big online poker tournaments with many overlays including the $200,000 Double Deuce and over $40,000 of house money in the $750,000 Guarantee.

“pokerNIRVana5″ and Matt “berkey11″ Berkey were the big winners on Full Tilt yesterday when the two of them chopped up over $200,000 between them in the $750,000. “yurabond” collected over $77,000 when he took down the always entertaining $200,000 Guarantee, while other events featured smaller fields this tournament blasted right through it’s number with nearly 1,500 rebuys. It also attracts some of the top online players who consistently run deep such as Ryan “ryanbluf” Karp, Tim “BegsClutch” Begley and Matt “All In At 420″ Stout. Steven “UFman2″ Burkholder looked to have the best day among the professional grinders adding 14th place in the $200,000 with a Sunday Mulligan final table appearance.

In live poker news, Full Tilt pro Jeff Madsen picked up a big tournament score when he won the Borgata Winter Open Main Event. He battled through the entire 766 player field with his fair share of luckboxing to collect $625,000 and a shiny new trophy. This is Madsen’s biggest win outside his two WSOP bracelets and his first tournament victory in nearly a year. The 10-man final table also features Matt Matros, David Fox, Russ Mallor, and Al Grimes. With the conclusion of the Borgata events, many of the Full Tilt pros are heading to Mississippi and then onto Los Angeles for the Matt Savage run L.A. Poker Classic.

andy bloch 04 Big Money Sunday January 17thIt was a busy day yesterday online with the full slate of Big Money Sunday games including the switch from the $750,000 Guarantee to the $1,000,000 big game but everyone kept their bankrolls aimed at “Aid for Haiti” fund raisers. Poker players took to the tables across the internet to do they’re part to help those suffering from the devastating earth quake in Haiti last week. I am still waiting on the official numbers from the tournaments and direct player-to-player donations but Full Tilt players did raise over $65,000 in the “No Play” tournaments alone. Well done.

Team Full Tilt member Andy Bloch was seen leading the way generating participation in the hourly “Aid for Haiti” tournaments. Bloch played throughout the night and into the morning from Las Vegas, entering most of the events and offering up a bounty on his head. Anyone who knocked him out would be shipped an autographed copy of his DVD “Beating Blackjack with Andy Bloch”. That put me in the mood to offer up some of my FTP Points for any book or DVD in the Full Tilt Store to anyone knocking me out, unfortunately no one seemed to understand or want the bounties. Andy suggested I offer to autograph them myself but I did not want to devalue the items. I hope to return later today with the final numbers across the board.

AidForHaiti Big Money Sunday January 17th

For the record, that was one of my more spectacular exits in awhile. All in the money in on the flop, I hate Jacks.

Big Money Sunday was dominated by the over $1,200,000 prizepool and severalpros going deep. Allen Cunningham was the biggest name to go deep in the biggest game, cashing out $17,199 for his final table appearance (9th) in the $1M Guarantee and Jeff Madsen sounding disappointed with his 33rd place finish. He was stacked well but dusted off after a few horrid beats. JAMA1CA2008 was our big winner of the night pocketing $225,368 for his win in the $1M Guarantee after outlasting “4ortik76″ in an long heads up battle. Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy had two big runs and friend of the blog Lee “acumen53″ Childs just missed a final table appearance in the Sunday Brawl. The $200,000 Rebuy continues to attract a pro heavy field and the most rail-worthy final tables, this week with Nick “FU_15″ Maimone, Steve “gboro780″ Gross, and Adam “AKat11″ Katz with “LeoEleven” coming away with the victory.

The monster field of the day was found in the third installment of the “Big Little Tournament” which drew over 33,000 and lasted just around 9 hours. The overlay this week was over $85,000 adding huge value to a tournament already offering a huge guarantee for microscopic price. The play was typical of smaller buyin events and has been run over by a truck in this space. I will offer up a little railbirding advice if you are one of us sick souls still awake at the conclusion of these tournaments or the $200,000 Double Deuce. Just wait for them to “make a deal” and enjoy the unintentional comedy, it’s worth the price of sleep deprivation most weeks.

Next week will bring the final “Big Little Tournament” (as far as this blogger knows) and it will be a fantastic turbo format. Full Tilt has also announce the creation of a new promotion which will double the guarantees of all regular events creating a $25,000,000 prizepool for the week starting January 26th. I will definitely be back to talk about “$25 Million Double Guarantees Week”

AllForCP All In for CP Charity Tournament

Many stories revolving around the world of poker seem to concentrate on the singular attempt to remove money or chips from opponents, degenerate gambling, or otherwise unhealthy activities. This is often an unfair representation of the entire poker community, there are many who go out of their way to support others in need through different venues. Bad Beat on Cancer, Ante Up for Africa, and Poker Jingle are just a few ways poker players come together to raise money for great charities and causes.

“All In for CP” at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino presents the next opportunity for players to continue their string of generosity.

The poker tournament will take place in the Hard Rock Poker Lounge on Saturday, December 12th at 2pm with a $550 buyin and $200 rebuys for the first 90 minutes. 50% of with the money will go into the tournament prizepool and the important 50% will benefit “The One Step Closer Foundation“. The poker room will be filled when many of your favorite sports stars, celebrities, and poker players including legend Doyle Brunson, 2009 WSOP Main Event Champion Joe Cada, 2008 WSOP November Nine member Dennis Phillips, Gavin Smith, Jeff Madsen, Barry Greenstein, Michael Binger, and Lacey Jones. Actors Mekhi Phifer, Jennifer Tilly, Cheryl Hines and Shannon Elizabeth with join rock stars Jerry Cantrell from Alice n Chains and Scott Ian from Anthrax.

There will also be an auction taking place with many exciting items up for grabs. Among others, you can bid on a two hour tutoring session with 2009 WSOP Champion Joe Cada or even have a “meet and greet” with Daniel Negreanu. For my money, the big ticket item on the auction block will be a date with the always wonderful Lacey Jones. I suspect quite a few dollars will the raised this year.

The One Step Closer Foundation is charitable organization whose main goal is to ease, as much as possible, the lives of those who suffer from Cerebral Palsy. It was founded by Jacob Zalewski who was born with Cerebral Palsy and understands the daily battles they must face. This is a tremendous chance for poker players to come out to show their support for a great charity and play alongside their heroes from the poker table, screen or stage. Players can register online at the “All In for CP” website or at the poker room on Saturday, December 12th.

ev47 day 1 ids 1273 impdi 2009 World Series of Poker Day 30 HORSE on the wayI should be taking every advantage of this lovely Thursday afternoon/evening because it might be the last slow day I have until I hop that jet airplane back east after the “November Nine” is set.  Just one little $1,500 PLO8 tournament kicking off today but tomorrow is the granddaddy of big buyin skill games.  The $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. is next up on the agenda.  We can expect a crush of players, railbirds, and poker media with unreal expectations.

There are three tournaments restarting including two more bracelet winners in the $10,000 Pot Limit Hold’em World Championship and $2,500 Limit Omaha/8 tournament.  The Mix Hold’em event begins it’s Day 2 and amazingly only 7 players from the money already.  There are some big names coming back with Barry Greenstein leading the field and Eli Elezra ahead of all other Full Tilt pros.

Mike Matusow will be my player to watch today in the Omaha/8 tournament where he sits 18 out of 23 remaining.  Matusow won his second WSOP bracelet in 2002 playing this game and knows how to pull up from the shortstack.

The last sane day of the WSOP, I intend to enjoy it.

~

My blogging brethren over at Wicked Chops Poker spend their days entertaining millions, perhaps billions and trillions of readers each day.  They’ve been sitting in media row each day to bring the hard hitting stories from the depths of the Amazon Room.  Today they are paying back some of their loyal readers with a freeroll on Full Tilt Poker.

The WSOP has introduced an event during the Main Event called Dream Team Poker.  It’s a concept recently developed and getting great reviews.  Three players team up and play a tournament against other teams.  Prize pool payouts are based on individual AND team performance.  The configuration prevents teammates from finding themselves at the same table unless they get really deep.

Wicked Chops Poker is giving you the opportunity to play in this event on their dime, as their second team.  The top 3 finishers will win the prize, if one of those players is unable to attend it moves to the next player(s).  Kind of like Miss America scandals.

I’m signed up and will be playing from the great big Amazonian Amazon Room.
