2011WSOP AlessioIsaia2 2011 World Series of Poker Day 16: Two Bracelets, One Long Day

A busy day around the Amazon and Pavilion Rooms as two bracelets are scheduled to be awarded if all things work out. If you’ve been listening to me the last few years (and that is doubtful), the Pot Limit Omaha was the only tournament to play down to the final table nine before calling it a night. Juha Vilkki leads the way but followed by Jeff Sarwer, David “Doc” Sands, and Emil Patel.

We have the potential for a very interesting final table if the 8-Game Mix event ever gets there. Still 25 players remain for Day 3 of the tournament that hit it’s “hard stop” time this morning at 3am but featuring a stellar cast of characters including three former November Niner members in the top 10. John Racener leads the pack with Eric Buchman and Ylon Scwartz also representing the last three Main Event final tables. John Juanda will begin the day looking for his second bracelet of the week.

1 – John Racener – 363,600
2 – Mayu Roca Uribe – 327,100
3 – Richard Geyer – 278,800

Other Notables: Marco Traniello (153,500), Shawn Buchanan (126,300), Nikolay Evdakov (38,100), Max Pescatori (24,400)

The big Day 2 to keep an eye on is the $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi-Low. The small field has a disguised group of players remaining with Cyndy Violette out front followed by Tom Dwan, Mike “GoLeafsGoEh” Leah, Frank Kassela, Kristy Gazes, Norm Chad, and Mike Sexton. 172 players remain of the starting 602 and 1st place picks up $200,459.

1 – Cyndy Violette – 43,400
2 – Hernan Novick – 43,400
3 – Michael Sigel – 41,500
4 – Mike “GoLeafsGoEh” Leah – 36,600

7 – Alexander Dovzhenko – 33,600
8 – Ming Reslock – 33,500
9 – Norman Chad – 33,400
10 – Frank Kassela – 33,100

Other Notables: David Levi (33,100), Kristy Gazes (31,400), Mike Sexton (27,100), Karina Jett (25,300), Kirill Gerasimov (23,300), Jason Mercier (22,600), Alexander Kravchenko (21,800), Scotty Nguyen (20,100), Justin “BoostedJ” Smith (19,500), David Chiu (18,500)

(Photographer/GreasieWheels)

Just in case you were living under a rock away from the poker over the last week, Phil Ivey captured his 8th career WSOP bracelet in the $3,000 HORSE event over Bill Chen. It was an interesting spectacle with a different atmosphere than the “durrrr” final table a few ago, this final table was stuck our little corner of the Amazon Room without the fan fare or big stadium seating of the main stage.

Two days later Ivey returned to the Pavilion Room for his bracelet ceremony followed by wide open press conference. The picture about was taken by the official WSOP photographer (with creative credit going to B.J. Nemeth) and is something special. You can click the image for the full size picture, it should give you a small feel for the number of people who jammed into the room to see history. Ivey and WSOP TD Jack Effel were joined on stage by Jack Binion.

The rest of the week was full of drama, fun, and of course the continuing parade of Perry Friedman’s hats. You can find just some of our the pictures our very own HeatherB snapped over the last few days. Enjoy after the jump.

RichardAshby 2010WSOP 4 2010 World Series of Poker: Week Three in Pictures

It was an oddly quiet week in the Rio this week with a few rare day with only one new event and some without a final table. That all changed as the week closed out when we found ourselves with 6 or 7 tournaments running at the same time. Richard Ashby became the second Full Tilt pro to win a bracelet at the 2010 WSOP and can be seen above collecting it from Tournament Director Jack Effel.

There was the always present controversy surrounding the annual Ladies Event but that didn’t stop them from coming in with a huge field. There were a few $10,000 Championship events which drew small, strong fields for the battle and big prizepool. During the Limit Hold’em Championship we had a few pros who were sweating the action during the Celtics/Lakers NBA Championship game, certainly with big money on the line. Mike Matusow is also pictured below sweating a prop bet with David Benyamine concerning the number of entrants.

After the jump you can find the rest of Heather B’s pictures from Week 3 at the 2010 World Series of Poker including a few new shots of the latest Perry Friedman “Parade of Hats”.

TomDwan 2010WSOP 5 2010 World Series of Poker: Week Two in PicturesTomDwan 2010WSOP 6 2010 World Series of Poker: Week Two in Pictures

The big story during week 2 of the 2010 World Series of Poker was obviously the run by Tom “durrrr” Dwan attempting to win his 1st bracelet, the accompanying cash, and a boatload of prop bet money with the poker cream of the crop. Play began on Day 2 of Event #11 and Dwan was sitting with a great chance to make history for various reason. But the online multi-table master would not settle for just playing this once event.

Before he restart he was also involved in the Deuce to Seven tournament at the same time in the Amazon Room. During breaks in the NLHE action he would go sprinting across the empty spaces to play as many as he could fit in. He would eventually bust after shoving a few hands in a row giving time to concentrate on his bracelet run.

Still that wasn’t enough for Dwan. He then bought into the $10,000 Stud/8 World Championship which he spent an hour playing during the dinner break for Event #11. As we all know, Dwan would go on to finish second in his first serious bracelet run at an electric final table. The picture on the right is Dwan’s seat slip and chips awaiting his return to the Deuce to Seven tournament. The picture on the left is his Event #11 stack waiting for his return.

After the jump you can find more pictures from Week 2 including more pictures of the various headgear of Perry Friedman, Ivey’s shiny new jacket, and chip tricks.

PerryFriedman 2010WSOP 7 2010 World Series of Poker Day 14: Pot Limit InsanityWe were treated with two of the slower days of the 2010 WSOP but things are definitely ramping back up today. Starting right off the bat will be the fast-and-furious insanity that is a $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha tournament followed by some of the best players hitting the Amazon Room for the restart of the $10,000 No Limit Deuce to Seven World Championship and the $1,500 Seven Card Stud tournament. Throw in a single table WSOP Tournament of Champions Qualifier tournament taking place off-site and we have plenty to keep us hopping throughout the day.

Last year the Pot Limit Omaha events were an aberration compared to the rest of the tournaments. Even the $1,000 NLHE tournament were no match for the speed in which players were sent to the rail showing up with a bucket full of gamble. Due to the size of the fields and depth of the stacks it was rare for an event last year to play down to it’s final table on Day 2 yet the PLO fields managed to get there (with the exception of Event #35 which stopped play at 11). There is just something about hearing “Pot, repot, all-in” constantly that builds the pots and ships players off the table at an incredible pace. Those who can manage their situation and squish the soft players will find themselves sitting very comfortably. Last year this event made the money at the end of Day 1 and was eventually conquered by Jason Mercier.

Less than a third of the $10,000 No Limit Deuce to Seven field was eliminated on the first day giving us 72 players returning today in the Amazon Room. As expected, this field was a spectrum players from all generations. From Billy Baxter to Chris Ferguson to Tom “durrrr” Dwan. Big money and reputations are again on the line as only the best players were willing to put up the 10 large for a single draw lowball game. Full Tilt’s Nick Schulman won his first WSOP last year in this event and is still alive coming into Day 2 with a chance to defend his crown.

PerryFriedman 2010WSOP 8 2010 World Series of Poker Day 14: Pot Limit InsanityThere was some interesting side action in this game as the night wore on. It seems Tom “durrrr” Dwan and Tony G had some bizarre last longer bet that somehow required a certain number of pushups. To give himself a little edge, Dwan put a $500 bounty on “The G” for good measure. A small percentage of the event buyin but Howard Lederer missed the announcement but not Andy Bloch. Shortly after having a chance knock him out Lederer realized his “mistake” but Bloch picked up the small bounty shortly after. Dwan won the prop and comes into Day 2 sitting 6th in chips. You can find the complete chip counts here.

$10,000 No Limit Deuce to Seven Lowball top ten chip counts:

1 – Homan Houshiar – 116,100
2 – Tommy Vedes – 112,600
3 – David “Bakes” Baker – 104,000
4 – Eric Cloutier – 83,500
5 – Anton Allemann – 80,600
6 – Tom “durrrr” Dwan – 64,100
7 – Brandon Cantu – 63,000
8 – Billy Baxter – 61,200
9 – Joe Cassidy – 60,300
10 – Doug Booth – 59,600

The $5,000 NLHE tournament will award the only bracelet of the day and it may be a long one. There are 18 players returning today including Full Tilt’s “pizza hat” wearing Perry Friedman and David Benefield. Others with a shot include Jason DeWitt (chip leader), Antonio Esfandiari, Amit Makhija, and Manny Minaya. When this event hit the money late yesterday it marked the first 2010 WSOP cash for Annette Obrestad.

AnnetteObrestad 2010WSOP 1 2010 World Series of Poker: Week One in PicturesThe crutch of a weak writer is a post with nothing but photos. Luckily we have access to some of the best in the room and I make no claim to be anything other than a hack. The first week of the WSOP is in the books so we thought we would share some of our favorite pics from the the last 7 days worth of tournaments.

The picture to the right is easily my favorite of the summer. New Full Tilt pro Annette Obrestad was making her long awaited debut mid-week and instantly found herself an entertaining table. EPT San Remo champion Liv Boeree was sitting a few seats to her left with poker multi-tasker and twitter phenom Joe Sebok to her immediate right. As the attention was focused on Obrestad, Sebok couldn’t help but photobomb (I believe that is what the kids are calling it) one of the shots. It didn’t take long for this image to get blasted all over the internet.

Perry Friedman is also one to never disappoint. Last year he spent the WSOP wearing a “grill” and cornrows in his hair. This year he said he was keeping it a little easier since it became an issue getting the Full Tilt logo reshaved in his head on a regular basis.  For this series he bought himself a boatload of silly hats which would change with each event. If a player busts him from the event, the hat is used as a bounty to memorialize the knockout. When asked how many hats he brought along he said, “Probably around fifteen but I only want to give away two.” You heard it hear first, Perry Friedman would like to win 13 bracelets this year. Jester hat, chicken hat, dreadlock hat, and a putting green. Unfortunately he has already gone over his allotted budget of two bounties.

Finally, Andy Black does not seem amused but it probably had more to do with the $10,000 Stud Championship.

Perry Friedman rocks the Full Tilt Poker “grill” to go with his corn rows

I’ve generally stuck to doing a “Week in Pictures” during the preliminary events of the WSOP but I now realize that I’ll be getting more photos than I know what to do with now that we’ve come to the Main Event.  So now we’re going to switch up to daily posts as long as we continue to get quality images.

Day 1a started with 1,116 and finished with 821 players.  A good number of Team Full Tilt survived to see Day 2.

ev48 day 1 isb 1369 impdi 2009 World Series of Poker Day 31 And the HORSE you rode in onToday begins the unofficial final run towards to the end of the 2009 World Series of Poker by kicking off the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event.  Most players have been grinding away for a month in the various games offered but only the big guns and lucky satellite players will be starting up today at noon.

The orange section of the Amazon Room has been configured differently for this tournament.  Every other table has been removed to allow more space between the players and perhaps make it easier for the masses on the rail to view their favorite player.  The fans will be out in force today.

This is one of the most prestigious events at the World Series of Poker with the huge buyin and the different skills needed to navigate the field.  Players will start with a whopping 150,000 in chips, super structure and 90 minute levels.  A small field that will take 5 days to play down to our new champion.

In addition to the H.O.R.S.E. tournament today, we will have a bracelet awarded in $2,500 Mixed Hold’em where Allen Cunningham came just short of the table.  Day 2 begins for the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha/8 where they are just 15 players short of the money and Full Tilt pro Perry Friedman is the chip leader.  Our other new tournament of the day is on the opposite end of the spectrum, a $1,500 LIMIT Shootout tournament.

I expect to watch a full stable of Full Tilt pros sitting amongst the 100+ H.O.R.S.E. players looking to take home the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy.

Chip counts for the restarts after the jump:

It was another great week for Team Full Tilt. Final tables were populated with players patched up in FTP gear and make a lot of noise. Three bracelets would be brought into the fold by Phil Ivey, Nick Schulman and Greg “FBT” Mueller. If the rest of the poker world wants to catch up, they better start working hard.

It’s Friday so that means it’s time for the Week in Pictures.  These are just some of the collection that did not make any posts during the week but are worthy of your time

ev21 day 1 isb 7645 impdi web 2009 World Series of Poker Week 2 in PicturesWe’ve put another week of the 2009 World Series of Poker in the books with more craziness.  The crowds continue to storm the hallways of the Amazon Room looking for a table and a chance.  The crazies are starting to make their way onto the scene, pros and amateurs are mingling together with a common goal, chip runners stay busy 24 hours a day.

While all this is going on, the good folks at Image Masters continue to provide us with some great action shots during the tournaments.  Every morning I receive pictures from the day before that I use to enhance the stories I try to bring the readers.  I hope they’ve added to the experience.

Today I bring you some photos from Week 2 of the 2009 World Series of Poker without my ramblings.  A small taste of what we have available, look for a full gallery coming in the next few days.  All pictures courtesy of Image Masters.
