Some recent updates in recurring stories:

Barney Frank’s hearing to discuss a rational approach to online gambling in the US has been postponed (and not yet rescheduled).  The House Financial Services Committee, which Frank chairs, was set to debate HR 2266 and HR 2267 on April 16.  The former bill would delay implementation of the UIGEA, and the latter would legalize and regulate online gambling in the United States.  PokerNewsDaily has the full story.

A British poker player accused of killing his American wife has been approved by a district judge for extradition.  Marcus Bebb-Jones allegedly killed his wife in Colorado in September 1997 and went to Las Vegas for a “playboy weekend” where he somehow managed to shoot himself in the head without causing life-threatening injuries.  Then he moved back to England and became a poker pro.  He was finally arrested in England last year and has been fighting extradition, arguing that he might face the death penalty in the US.  He will be extradited to Colorado if the British Home Secretary signs off on the district judge’s decision.

In more lighthearted news, Hot Dog Harrison, a Canadian college student who prop bet his friend that he could eat 450 hot dogs in April (all live via webcam) is falling below ED (expected dogs, i.e. a winning pace).  Heading into April 13′s dinner, he had only eaten 175.  He would have needed to eat 20 by the end of the day to get back to neutral ED.

kly dogs FINAL 2 A Poker Player’s Guide to Online Poker Law (Part 1: The United States)

Last week, Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ, pictured above) finally dropped his hold on US Treasury nominees – he had been blocking important Treasury personnel from taking office because he was on tilt over the Obama administration’s delaying enforcement of his 2006 anti-online gambling law, the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

According to an article (flush with poker metaphors) at PokerNewsDaily.com, Kyle’s fold had little to do with good policy: it wasn’t that he finally deemed the recovery of the US and world economies more important than obstructing online gambling.  Rather, Obama simply threatened to appoint the nominees anyway during the next Congressional recess.

In honor of the esteemed Senator’s decision, here’s a brief overview of online poker law.  Part 1 will deal with the United States, while future editions will highlight other parts of the world.  Follow the jump!

The Captain The Captain

In our last post, Chris Ferguson sat down and shared his thoughts on the UIGEA and the state of online poker. This week, we were able to talk to Howard Lederer and get his perspective as well. Speaking as a PPA board member, he discussed what he sees as a favorable future for online poker. Here’s what Howard had to say, in his own words:

Big Donkey Big Donkey

Let’s start the week with the really important news; even Big Donkeys get things right once in awhile.

If you’re one of the three people who read my post from last week, you’ll remember that I predicted a WPT victory for Erik Seidel at the Foxwoods Poker Classic. Well, lo and behold, I was right.

Sure, my prediction didn’t earn me anything like the nearly $980K that Seidel took home for the victory, but a couple of fivers from the Monkey, the Captain, and the Inuit will pay for a few brews at the end of the day.

The Captain The Captain

Following the recent UIGEA hearings in Washington D.C., there’s been more positive coverage (a bit of light at the end of the tunnel?!) of the state of affairs for online poker. In brief, it’s been clearly established that there isn’t an effective method in place for blocking transactions that fund something called “illegal wagering,” banks can’t and won’t effectively police this, and no one has been able to identify exactly what unlawful Internet gambling is. On the whole, it’s extremely vague and incredibly ineffective at achieving any positive end.

Chris Ferguson was in D.C. for the proceedings, and he definitely has some thoughts on what took place. We were able to sit down with Chris and a tape recorder a couple of days after the Senate hearing, and get his take on the current state of affairs for online poker. Here’s his opinion – in his own words:
