Few players have had as much attention heading into their first WSOP as Annette “Annette_15″ Obrestad. I had a chance to speak with her after it was all over.
So how was your first WSOP?
Pretty much went as expected. I try not to ever enter any tournaments with high expectations since it’s so high variance. You don’t want to go in expecting to win and then be disappointed when you don’t.
It wasn’t a great series. I had 4 cashes, one 11th place. I was really hoping to make a final table, since everyone notices that. If you cash, nobody really does.
The 11th place came in the shootout, right?
Yeah. Day 1 and 2 had great structures where you started with 120 blinds. I had a lot of bad players at my tables and caught some hands. The last day was down to 14 players so it was a two table tournament. We only started with 75 blinds, which I thought was really stupid. Why would you want to increase the variance for the final day? The whole thing tilted me, though I’m not sure if it affected my play.
I doubled up early on and then lost two big coinflips to the same guy. Then I was short in the small blind with A7. An aggressive player raised, I pushed, and the big blind tanked and called, then the original raiser went all in. So I was like, “that’s no good.” One guy had AQ and the other guy had tens, so I was pretty much drawing dead.
How’d the cards treat you? You tweeted early on that you were drawing some tough tables?
Well I don’t want to complain or anything, but I guess I did run pretty bad. Way below expectation. Especially early in the series, I couldn’t win an all-in and got coolered a lot.
I usually had pretty tough tables. When I drew a couple soft tables, I frequently had really good players on my left.
But that’s poker.
Have you been playing any cash games around here?
Yeah, I’ve been playing $5/$10 at the Venetian a lot – up about $15k. I go after tournaments and on my days off. I’m such a degen. I usually come back to my apartment around 6am and the security guard is just getting in. He says, “Good morning” and I say, “Good night.” Pretty much every night. Wash, rinse, repeat.
What about online?
No, I haven’t had internet access for three weeks. I tried to get it through Cox and they were like, “We need you to fax us a copy of your lease,” so I did, and then I never heard anything back.
I don’t know how it is in Norway, but in the US the local cable company is usually a monopoly, so their customer service is horrible since you can’t go anywhere else.
Yeah. The apartment’s cable had expired and I asked them if they could turn it back on, and they said no, that I’d have to bring them the old box and get a new one. So I never got that either.
You’re going back to Norway in about a week. Any rooting interest in the Main Event?
Well I’ve got two and a half horses. Two people I’ve got 80/20 stakes, and another one I’ve got 50/50. I’ve had really bad luck staking people in the Main Event in the past. I think I’ve lost $80k and never had anyone cash. Hopefully that’ll change…
Other than that, I don’t really have an interest, other than that I’d like to see a big name pro at the final table. Doesn’t really matter who it is, but I’d like to see one, like last year with Ivey. If the final table is just 9 unknowns, I probably won’t even watch it.
